New to me 222 - the venerable triple deuce

On the subject of transistor, TR801/2 should be hfe-matched?

I think only 871s need replacement but as far as I can tell these are the best substitutes:

2sc871 - ksc1845
2sc733 - ksc1815
2sc815 - ksc1815
2sa539 - ksa1015

I have KSC1845's in my au222, but the past few builds that have the 871's, were replaced with ZTX694B. They are available with higher gain than the 1845's, closer to the gain of the 871. Does it make any audible difference, I dunno.

Z T X a what a what?

Will look into that. I thought 1845s were already high gain.

BTW I found a version with the diodes. I wonder if it's the same solitary one that I saw on Buyee:

Edit: 2SC871 vs sub KSC1845-FTA

I'm not convinced, the hfe for 871 is listed as 350 min, ksc1845f version is 300-600, and I know that's accurate because I recently hfe-matched some for a Concept receiver.

I have over 100 1845's, all measure 300 to 400. There is a higher version, but I believe that is no longer available.

Are they the F versions? I only have 10 or so and they were all high 400s to low 500s. Is my transistor checker inaccurate? It's definitely precise. Ordering another 20 now..

that's a good idea

I keep meaning to get one of those big rotating circuitboard holders too: the small alligator clamp things fall over and slide around all the time

Haha I thought that was bolero posting again and I was like, how did he get one so fast?!
Ha! No, it's also the tone board from the Eight so a little misplaced here but you get the idea.

Also, my 82yo mother has been here for the weekend so I've been getting to know the headphone stage on the 222 from my bed late at night which has been great! I have to give her credit though, we've listened to several records, watched several restoration videos on YouTube, and she's taken an interest in all my gear.

Probably shouldn't be depopulating the boards when I don't have my parts in... But can't help it. Feel more confident about taking it all apart.

Came up with tape to keep the switches all in a row. Otherwise they all start flopping around.

@petesui what speakers are up in the corner?

Edit: in other Sansui news, sold the 607MR today. What a relief. Was taking up space and really did nothing for me compared to the G99x.

Spoke to someone on FB who is convinced that the 222s and 555s in Japan all are multi region. He makes the point that you should be able to tell from the underside, since the multi voltage block sits in front of the transformer, but I think it was just luck of the draw for him that the ones he has bought have em. May chance a 555 sometime.

I spent a lot of time researching this at some point last year. The “theory” I came to was the original series 222/555/777 MAY all be multi-voltage, but from then on there were the Japanese market models (100v only) and the export models (multi voltage).

Would love one of the more knowledgeable members clear that up for good.

Also congrats on #5 it cleaned up very nicely.
I was watching that one as well, but decided to go with an 800 instead. The ad said “220v only cannot test” which told me it was in fact an export model and though dirty it still had the blue tape on it (first time for me). Couldn't pass up the price and an easy cleanup.
Waiting on Mouser now…

Been meaning to pop in and say I enjoy your threads and your enthusiasm.

Also @petesui thats some high praise for the 222, the 3300 is a fantastic receiver. Very underrated imho (Love Mine). One of these days I’ll have to pull the trigger on one of these sweet small AU-222’s. My 101 impressed me and I am a bass head so it’s just a matter of time.

Yeah cause the 777 we know there's domestic versions of. Do we know if there's 100v only for the 555? I think someone on the FB group said so. Maybe early serial numbers?

I regret to inform you that I saw this and it gave me an idea:

Can’t wait! Stripping down the last one was ballsy and turned out awesome. Would hate to see the masses start doing it, but do your thing bro.

It would help to figure it out if more Japanese sellers would pop the top in the pics of the units they sold. They do so rarely.
