New 'tube' receiver for $160.99 - too weird

Pyle has been around for years as a name brand product. It's never been considered high end in any form. Most of the younger crowd buy their car gear because it's cheap.

This unit was obviously made for look more than anything else. Where they get off with the power output claims is beyond me. $159 though, so it's not really meant to be a great audio investment. Still would love to see your review.

Heat dissipation

What they said:thmbsp:

I'm amazed someone just went out a bought it, FOR SCIENCE!. I don't have high expectaions, but no matter what it'll probably handle tv audio just fine:yes:. 20lbs is a little weak, no way the wattage is near right. Although it could be (as one member brought up) about 60watts:dunno:. All I know is my 727 is 40wpc and weighs 31lbs:scratch2:...

Its about heat dissipation. Weight is proportional to wasteage, not wattage.
Old amps waste a lot. You can build a LM3886 based amp that makes 35 watts a channel and weighs nothing. You could put in a tube buffer in it and still have no weight. In my amp the transformer is nearly 80% of the weight. Its still only ~10 lb. A bridged 3886 amp will put out more power and not weigh much more.
Cool.

Ok, it arrived. I took pics of the inside, it looks like the tubes are "6v1".. They ARE wired up into the signal path and power, and the transformer is fairly large, but DOES contain 4 transistors for power amping. Doesn't seem that powerful though.

Now to plug it in!

OK. It's been over 10 minutes. The Pyle must have had a hot chassis and Hakemon is with the choir invisible. ;-)

I'm hooking it up, lol, the pics will come as soon as I have it singing----or trying.. lol

I have to unhook my sony 5.1 receiver, im placing it in it's space for now

Not to hijack, but... Anyone remember that computer motherboard that had a pre-amp tube to 'color' the soundcard output?

Ah yes...the AOpen AX4B-533 Tube and the AX4GE Tube-G. Interesting idea - basically a tube buffer with a 6922 at the output of the onboard sound blaster.

It definitely needs better grounding. I tried using a USB flash disk with MP3s, and on each track change I could hear cell phone interference noises.

Oh, and it doesn't seem to remember settings. :P I have to set the loudness and EQ controls everytime it's turned on.. LOL

Correction: It does save the settings, it's hitting the DSP button that causes it to change configuration..

Correction 2: I took out the tubes, all 4 are 6N1, two of them look like G but it's a 6. Does have mixed brands though.. 2 pairs of different brands..

Nice transformer. I'm looking for how the 2000 watts gets to it via Tesla's wireless transmission because there is not way anything inside there is putting out 2000 watts even through both channels a 1 Ohm.

Yea, I doubt 2000 watts, the caps don't look as big as my Kenwood Elevens caps either, so I doubt they can store that much power.

Either way though, it doesn't sound "that" bad when up mild volume. I'm leaving it on right now to burn it in, watching Superman on AMC, haha..

Could the hissing perhaps be the 6 ohm speakers I am using? Perhaps their impedance is too low, despite being advertised to 2 ohms?

"Designed in USA", Engineered in Japan". :scratch2: Aint circuit design and engineering the same thing? Oh wait, "design" must mean creating a pretty box, kinda like those art majors back at my college (Syracuse University) claiming to do "design". At least this box looks reasonably normal, not like those wacky shaped things from China...

Another time, an art major classmate wanted to picture something in the time dimension. "Oh, we electrical engineers do that often, come look at this oscilloscope." Another time he wanted to assign colors to numbers. "Been done, 1 is brown, 2 is red, 3 is orange and so on..." He didn't like the EIA color code (for resistors) assignments. :)
