Newbee to alpha series 907 vs 711 mod

I have tried to read all the various threads but still keep questioned is there such a massive difference between a stock a907DR and a X711 that will be upgraded with better components?

I currently have a X911DG but don’t need the D/A and prefer the amp direct XLR input from the X711 and also have great interest in the a907DR.

I don’t need all the power I have a small room and Acoustic Energy AE1 Signature Series. Although on some tracks the 911 volume goes beyond the 12 o clock.

Anyway I have two questions.

1. Is there a sonic benefit in the XLR inputs (AMP direct) vs others with RCA source direct
2. Is the newer a907DR stock vs X711( after upgraded parts) better and has anyone heard. This? What would be the biggest sonic differences?

I just picked-up the X911 and really like the SANSUI sound signature and can see great potential .

Thanks!

That's a 'no' in my opinion, XLR inputs only come into their own when used in an electrically noisy environment or when cable runs are long.

The differences if any will be subtle in my opinion, with possibly a tip of the hat to the α907DR for overall sound quality.

There are Sansui collectors who own, or have heard, both of these models. I own an α907MR, and have reconditioned an X711, but this was before the α907MR ownership so there was no chance to compare. As you may be aware the X711 is an 'α' in all but name.

I have a modded 711 (along with two other 607-equivalent models - the 701 and the 607MRX) and also have several 907s including the DR.

All of the 607 models sound great, but I find the 907s to offer a bit more magic. The difference becomes even more apparent the harder you push the amps. The 907s are simply more sophisticated and have more grunt on tap.

Well...yes. Some differences are unfortunately unbridgable when compared 711 and (any) Alpha907.
Simply put: alpha 907 is kind of statement model, the best parts inside, meticulous and obssessive engenering, etc. On the other hand, the 711 and similar smaller amps (so called "607" models on japanaise market on which 711/911 are based for export) - were models which assure income and surviving osf the company as such, since these model were/are best sellers.
So, it is simply impossibe to compare entry level v.s top model.

1. Yes, if you have enogh high resolution speakers and front end (CD, turntable etc) - since here the active preamplifier part of the integrated is bypassed.
2. Yes, it is better and don't mess with "upgrading" 711 simply puting boutique parts inside if the amp otherwise is working flowless. One thing though - it should be serviced and adjusted if that’s not performed recently, and here in AK you will find many thread considering exactly this.
Hope this help
