Newbie having trouble refoaming Kirksaeter Monitor 150s--centering problems

I shim each and every one because i know it perfectly centers the VC. It also makes gluing easier because you can lift the cone away from the basket while gluing. All the reasons stated above are more reasons to shim. Using a test tone IMO is also a good way if you decide shimming is too much of a hassle. One or the other is a requirement if you want to assure a good job each and every time.

Applying DC (battery method) can also move the cone and hold it there for you in the "away" position to provide space/gap for applying adhesive.

Shimming also allows you to have the spyder in a dead-flat neutral position as the glue dries in cases when the spyder has developed some sagging.

I gave up shimming when I was told of and tried the 60 Hz test tone method. I have never just gone "by feel". I prefer the tone method because there is no need to cut anything. Plus, if there is noise when playing the tone through and un-foamed speaker (at moderate volume), you know there are bigger problems.

If you need a tone generator, there is a great free Android app called "PA Tone".
Thanks so much for letting me know about the App!
