Newly acquired Fisher X-202-B. I'll need some help. A few questions may follow.

Glued the new knob brights.

Applied the glue with a toothpick:

Turned the knobs upside-down on a soft surface and placed some weight for the glue to adhere. Left it like this for about 45 minutes:

And placed back on the unit:

Outstanding job, Nines!!:thmbsp: That baby looks like new! Isn't it amazing what a little time and careful work can accomplish? I would be very pleased if it were mine!!

Now all that is left (cosmetic-wise) is a knob for Center Speaker & Master Volume.

Guys.... for today's carts (MM & HOMC) do we use Phono 1 or Phono 2 inputs in the back? And ...... is Phono1 = RIAA1 & Phono2 = RIAA2 on the front selector? I would presume so, but thought I'd ask.

:scratch2:

Those are the toughest to find.
You need the same knobs you'd find on the top of both sides of your 500-C.
The long small type.
Plus, they need the indicator bump on them because the brights don't have arrows.

I recommend another vendor in the auction site:

tfsony

He made me a brass knobs with dash and fits perfect!!

No affiliation with him.

I've bought the brass caps from the vendor you mention above and wasn't happy with them. See my post #30 in this thread. This is why I bought another set from a different vendor, post #53, which I am very happy with.

I'm looking for two brown knobs (Master Volume & Center Speaker) not the brass caps.

Thanks anyway. :)

Oh very rare. Sometimes happens! One custommer happy, another one not!

If you are looking for the brown knows sent me a PM may be I can help you!!!

Regards!!!

Well .... the unit is back from the doctor.

Rebuilt, thanks to the kit from Jim McShane and the work done by a friend. He did the rebuild for my 500C and 500B. He actually replaced a couple of pieces in the rebuild kit with pieces from his personal stock. He told me a unit like this deserves it. Outstanding!

I have not had the chance to hook it up, I probably will do so during the upcoming couple of days.

But, before I post anything further, I want to "wax" the faceplate and make it look nice. Any special "wax" I should use. I really don't want to screw this up. Face-plates for an "X-202-B" are not exactly easily found.

I really am happy with how the face-plate looks, but I want it to look super good.

Am I worrying too much?

:scratch2:

Hooked it up, playing it since ten o'clock this morning.

So I had the chance to hook it up this morning, and it's been playing ever since.

The rebuild was well worth it. It sounds amazing. From what I've heard so far, it reminds me allot of my 500B (warm, detailed, mellow mid-range, crisp & pleasant upper-end) but has that 500C "authority" (for lack of a better word) on the low end. It's just wonderful to listen to. I've been listening to it for the last 4-5 hours and I could continue listening to it for several hours more. Just a fantastic sounding unit.

Analog source: AR-XB turntable (Shure M95ED, Jico SAS)
Speakers: ProAc Studio 125

Thanks to Jim McShane for the complete rebuild kit, and a very special thanks to my friend Richard for doing the rebuild work and substituting a couple of pieces from his personal stock.

Now I know why the X-202-B is highly regarded. Simply wonderful. :thmbsp:

Maybe tomorrow I'll gather up enough courage and clean & wax the faceplate.

Thanks for allowing me to share this with you from the very start.

:)

A tweak or two for the jewels.

I found the brightness from the unit's bulbs to be a bit too bright on the replacement jewels. I know they are only reproductions and not the originals ..... the original jewels had a certain "diamond cut" that would mellow the light so as not to be too bright.

Also, I found that the individual light bulbs that were supposed to feed light to a specific jewel somewhat dispersed the light causing the jewel next to it to be semi-lit.

No problem....

Tweaked as follows, with no harm done to any part of the unit.

Before any tweaking, jewels just too bright:

Minor tweak here. Wrapped some electrical tape around the light bulb tubes, enough tape to make contact with the faceplate so as to make a "seal". No light would escape.

Next, I needed something that would absorb and diffract the light entering the jewel:

Make little balls of Scotch Tape and stuff them into the jewels:

Difference is quite apparent. The last jewel (on the extreme right) has yet to be stuffed, and jewel "C" is indeed stuffed but not lit:

It ain't over yet...

Sorry for the sad pics, but I promise better ones once this puppy is up-to-par!

Stay tuned.

Thanks!
