Poor placement in the hallway though; that left channel is buried.

Sweet Rosewood veneers though! :thmbsp:

Just noticed something weird. Felix is standing way down at the left end of the console, must be lifting the left lid. But the right-hand lid is propped up at the same angle. ???

I'm wondering if it might not be U shaped with a connecting strip running along the back?
It's hard to see, but there looks to be an end to the white edge on the top past the opening, which could be where the connector lifts off???

Where's this from? It there another angle?

From the link in the OP, which has zero info. Imagine the photo was originally in Architectural Digest or similar mag.

Love it! I am still determined to make a console to match my decor.

I definitely want something space age yet minimal:scratch2:

Had to use my own Jedi mind powers to dig a little deeper.

The photo was taken by Julius Shulman and is is of the Stahl Residence located at 1635 Woods Dr. in Los Angeles designed by architect Pierre Koenig. It was taken in 1959 so could well indeed be mono. Sadly I didn't turn up much about the actual console unit.

Here are some additioal photos of the house if interested. ..

As a really off topic tangent. That particular iconic photo is also one which has been restaged/shot with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

Although without the emphasis on the stereo... er.. console.

:ntwrthy: Excellent detective work Chicks.

Re the green screen shot, I wondered if for Birth of the Blues thing they photoshopped Koenig out of the picture and filled in the left side of the console to match the right. Based on the 1960 photo above I think that's what they did. Or there's a sliding panel. :dunno:

The 2006 unit looks quite different, probably not sound equipment at all. :(
From somewhere on wikipedia:
To replace the long-discontinued Formica entry cabinet shown in the famous Julius Schulman photograph, Cracchiolo commissioned Jerry McCabe, the original manufacturer, to repeat the design.

Yeah, looks like it was a mono unit, after all.

Expand the 2006 unit as big as you can get it, and you should see what appears to be the outline of two woofers on each side, and rectangular cutouts - horns? - above them. I much prefer the look of the original.

If the photo was taken in 1959 I am pretty sure that it is not Bang&Olufsen, although the veneer reminds me of B&O gear from that time. (I have for example an "Amplifier 608" from 1960 with brazilian rosewood enclosure.) I am quite familiar with any fifties and sixties gear of that Danish brand.

The biggest B&O speakers of that time were the S 607 stereo which I also have and they look very different.
