Nice Realistic STA-80..

Very nice, well made receiver from around 1974. It appears to be in great shape too. I think it put out a solid 44wpc or so. I love those lower to mid-powered Realistics from the mid to late 70's. I have the STA-90 and actually like it better than the big STA-2100 that I had.

Looks very similar to the STA-82 I gave my dad. Nice receiver although I didn't care for the Loudness function very much. Made the bass tubby and bloated. I was really impressed with it when I connected it to a set of Nova 7b's.

I picked up one mint at a flea market for $20. Shortly one channel went, fixed, then the other channel. Look for the 2200uf 35V caps on the main amp board to go. They are right in the middle of the amp board in the back. Back then pnps were expensive so they use a quasi-comp design where 2 low power transistors drive 2 npns. The big caps couple to the speaker in series. Best to replace these caps before they go. squirt some contact cleaner on the switches.

My first real stereo, bought in Oklahoma City in 1974. In fact, I think I bought the 'best' system shown in the catalog. I see one now on Ebay, I just might buy it. Interesting that the output stage has capacitor coupling as noted below. I remember putting on Dark Side of the Moon, lighting up, and tears of joy as The Floyd played their way through the album.

I have a SA1000A amp and TM1000 tuner from the same gold faced RS line. Good advise about the caps. I found several leaking in mine.
