Since Nightwish hasn't really been explored thoroughly in these pages, I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread about the band and their music.

For those who don't know, Nightwish is a Finnish sextet with a few twists

Female lead vocals, currently supplied by Floor Jansen. Previous lead vocalists have been Tarja Turunen and Annette Olzen. The band is not averse to using boy sopranos, choirs and orchestras to pad out the sound.

The first album saw the light of day in 1997 and was entitled "Angels Fall First". Since then, the output has been steady, with the latest album, Yesterwynde, being released in 2024.

So, what are your experiences with the band? Share your discoveries here. I'll supply stuff myself, but I know what's in my head. I'm more interested in what is in yours.

The premise of these threads is simple; a look at what particular bands mean to people who have been exposed to the music and their thoughts on the experiences. Rush was simple. 3 guys, after a bit of shifting around and becoming comfortable with whatever the next few decades might bring along, became one of the powerhouses of rock. The Rush thread here was extremely successful but, sadly, became a memorial to Neil Peart.

In this thread, I'd like to keep things a little looser. If you like the latest album and never heard the others, never mind. Post about what you enjoy listening to and don;t worry about the rest.

My journey begins as follows:

Christmas 2023, I was ripping CDs containing Handel's Messiah, in preparation for a post in the ongoing Messiah thread and started reading sleeve notes. In one of them, I came across the name of a boy soprano whose name was unfamiliar, so I thought I'd track down anything else he may have done. The answer turned out to be the vocal introduction to The Poet And The Pendulum, from the album Dark Passion Play. At this point, I'd heard nothing by the band. This was about to change.

I am also fan of nightwish (and gothic in general). Like the combination of heavier music with a clear woman voice.
In that genre nightwish is very good. And also proud of Floor Jansen as a dutch guy.

I have a few, maybe the first three, Nightwish albums, w/ Ms Turunen doing the singing. Lost interest, I guess, after those.

Nothing against the band, but while I was/am a strong devotee of Metal, the Symphonic variety just didn't do it for me. I've tried a few others, e.g., Epica and Within Temptation, but (again) only have a couple of albums by those outfits as well.

I think that if these types of bands had a more Progressive streak @ their sound, I'd like them more. I did enjoy the "femmevox" elements they presented. I mean hell, some of my favorite "Rock" vocalists are Nico and Courtney Love (and Jennie Hahn of the band Babe Ruth), and I like LOTS of lady opera singers. So, it's the lack of punch and "complexity" @ the actual numbers that left me out of sticking w/ this type of material.

^^ PS: And to be fair to these few Symphonic Metal band types, I am also NOT a fan of such (so-called) Power Metal acts as Parkway Drive .... in fact I find ALL of PD's material a bore ... and even tedious to hear.
 
^^ PPS: Now then, gimme a "lady singer" who can belt out material akin to the sound of, say, SLAYER, and I'd probably be all in forever.

nb: Might also be interesting to hear a "femmevox" lead vocalist @ any of several numbers by the Teutonic Metal powerhaus called Rammstein.

Great thread Kevin, I’ve played Nightwish on the music threads and had a little interaction with others. I first got into them around 2000 after the Wishmaster album came out and was definitely into the band from there on. Tarja was my favourite singer but I also like Floor Jansen the current singer as I had heard her before other bands etc. Have her on some of my Ayreon cds etc.
I have most of their early stuff , some vinyl, some cds and some on both lol. Also some concert dvd’s.
Awesome band. Also have Tarja’s first solo album. I went down a lot of rabbit holes of female fronted power metal or symphonic type bands after learning of Nightwish.
