Nobsound E6 Preamp Uses Directly Heated Tubes

I recently noticed this new preamp that uses directly heated tubes.

Many people prefer the sound of directly heated triode tubes, though they are typically used as output tubes in SE (single ended) amplifiers. The most commonly used DHT output tubes are the 2A3 and the 300B, both of which are currently produced by a variety of manufacturers.

But preamps that use DHTs (directly heated triodes) are, as far as I know, very rare. This is the first time I've seen a mass produced DHT preamp.

The tube used in the Nobsound E6 is the 2J27L, which is not very well known. You may also see the tube number translated a bit differently into English. This is common with Chinese and Russian labels. The actual label is 2Ж27Л. It's a pentode but it's connected in triode, as pentodes often are when used as a preamp tube. The tubes used in the popular FX are also triode-strapped pentodes.

One of the key features of the 2J27L is that its 2.2v filament draws very little current - only 56mA. Such low filament current tubes are often called "battery tubes" because they were generally used in battery powered radios where their low current draw ensures adequate battery life.

When I was breadboarding a variety of tube types for a preamp project a while back, one of the tubes I tried was a close cousin of the 2J27L called the 2P29L. In all, I tried about a dozen different tube types and the 2P29L was (to my ears) one of the top 3. The others were the 6V7G and the 1626. In the end I built the preamp, which I dubbed the Boogie Factor, using the 1626.

But the 2P29L was impressive and, although I didn't build anything with it, I posted a thread over on DIY Audio about the circuit I breadboarded since a lot of European DIYers are into Russian tubes.

Seeing that this new preamp used a very similar tube, my interest was piqued and I decided to give one a try. I've been listening to it for a couple of weeks now and I'm glad that I did.

At the time I ordered it they were on sale on eBay ($50 shipped) but I decided to pay a bit more and get it from Amazon ($60 shipped) just in case I decided to return it. They offer free returns and it's a very simple process. No need, though. I'll be keeping it.

I don't mean for this to be a full review, I just wanted to give others a "heads up" on it since inexpensive Chinese tube preamps like the FX are so popular here. Perhaps someone will do a head to head comparison between the two.

I don't own an FX but some may recall that I did breadboard the tube it uses during my earlier experiment. I tried it at the abnormally low voltages used in the FX and also at higher voltages, closer to what the tube data sheet recommends. At lower voltages it sounded better than I expected. Running it at more "normal" voltages was a huge improvement. Still, it was near the bottom of my list compared to the other tubes I tried. YMMV, as always.

I'm not very good at describing what I hear but so far I'm liking the Nobsound E6 a lot in terms of overall sound. It does require some break-in. Audio memory has its limitations but it seems very similar overall to what I heard with the 2P29L on the breadboard. So that's a positive.

And, unlike the FX, they claim that the tube is being operated at a higher voltage, supposedly 105v on the plate. When I breadboarded its cousin, the 2P29L, I was running very similar voltage (112v on the plates) and many DIY builders run 2P29Ls in the same range, sometimes even a bit under 100v. So, if the tubes are operated at normal voltages, that's another positive.

There some negatives, however. I'm not too fond of the layout with the input jacks in the back and the output jacks in the front next to the volume pot. I'd much rather see all of them in the back.

To some that might be a deal breaker. That said, anyone who has pulled tube amps from old console stereos knows that they commonly have their inputs in the front. I even have one whose input jacks are right in the middle of the chassis, surrounded by tubes. Not ideal, but I guess I've learned to overlook such issues if the sound is good.

Those who are heavily into tube rolling might also be disappointed. It comes with the Chinese version of the 2J27L which, like most all vintage Chinese tubes, is simply a copy of the Russian version. As far as I know, those are the only choices. I ordered some of the Russian ones from a Ukrainian seller so I'll eventually see how they compare. Most people seem to find that Russian tubes sound better than the Chinese ones. We'll see when they arrive. But, at this point, I'm happy with what I'm hearing.

My bench is currently occupied by a breadboarded, directly coupled SET, project which I've been working on sporadically, so it will be a while before I can open the E6 up and measure things. But one of the things I want to see is how they have the filaments wired and exactly what the operating points are.

Depending on the stoutness of the filament supply it's possible that the 2P29L can be rolled in safely since it uses the same pin arrangement. The 2P29L filaments run on the same voltage but they draw about 2x the current. Such a swap can be risky and this is not normally something I would try or recommend. On the other hand, the current draw of these "battery tubes" is quite low - a 2P29L draws less current than one of the tubes used in the FX, for example. And one of the FX tubes draws over 3x the heater current of the 2J27L.

So, if the filament supply is stout enough that it can be used safely, the 2P29L might provide another tube rolling option.

Another difference is that the 2P29L has a lower mu (amplification factor) of ~8 compared to ~16 for the 2J27L used in the E6. In comparison, I believe the tube used in the FX is somewhere in the 30 to 35 range, which is more than necessary in many cases. Some people complain that the volume control of the FX is too touchy - that it's difficult to make precise adjustments because it gets loud too quickly. This little Nobsound E6 doesn't seem to suffer from that problem. It's quiet too, no hiss or hum even with the volume at max.

Nobsound / Douk is also not totally forthcoming about another characteristic of the 2J27L. In stock form the tube is enclosed in an aluminum shell and has a plastic knob on the top to make it easier to insert and remove from its loctal type socket. Here's a pic:

They obviously realized that a metal tube wouldn't fly in terms of marketing so they ditched the aluminum shell and removed the glass tube from it. It does look more familiar like that and I did the same thing with the 2P29L, which uses the same metal shell.

All the glow, however, comes from LEDs mounted under the tubes. None of the "battery tubes" I've tried had any noticeable glow due to their very low filament voltage and current. On the positive side, the LEDs used are orangeish and not ridiculously bright. Much better than green, blue or red, which just looks wrong to me.

While the description of the E6 suggests that you might want to try the Russian version of the 2J27L, what they don't tell you is that you will need to cut off the shell because, even if the looks don't bother you, the opening in the top of the preamp is too small to insert the tube unless you remove it from the aluminum shell. This holds true for both the Russian and the Chinese version of the 2J27L.

And removing it from the shell creates another issue that must be dealt with. These tubes use a loctal base which, just like the more familiar octal base, has a central locator pin that ensures that the tube is oriented correctly when you plug it in. When you remove the glass tube from the shell the locator pin is part of the aluminum base, which is discarded. So you need to mark the position of the locator pin on the glass before removing the tube from the base.

The description does mention that the stock tube is marked in this manner and that if you insert the tube wrong damage will occur but it doesn't give any background information.

Now if you forget to mark the position of the locator pin it is possible to identify the locator pin's position using a multimeter. That's because the pins on either side of the locator (pins 1 and 8) are the filament. So if you find two adjacent pins with continuity between them the locator pin would be between them. That said, it's probably safe to say that many who buy these little Chinese preamps don't own a multimeter.

I'd also note that while the tube type is marked on the aluminum shell, there are no markings at all on the glass tube itself since it was never intended to be removed from its shell.

So, while this preamp certainly has some quirks, you might consider giving it a try.

I'm not sure who developed it. Nobsound / Douk seems to be the distributor and their eBay listing shows it branded Cadisi, which I've never heard of. The one I purchased through Amazon is branded Nobsound. They are obviously the same, though.

As for the sound . . . I'm impressed but so far I've only listened to it for a limited time using a SE tube amp. I'll be trying it with my Aiyima A-07 Class D at some point I'm sure.

With the tube amp, mostly streaming jazz, I would say that it's very clear, open and detailed. This aligns with my previous experience with directly heated tubes. It has excellent imaging and the highs are very spacious and airy. It seems well balanced but, to be clear, I haven't been listening to any thumpy, bass heavy, material.

So only first impressions so far and YMMV, as always. Check it out if you're so inclined.

Yes, thanks for the heads up and all the details. Having inputs on the front really is a bummer.
 
I bought one via Amazon mainly 'cause my wife is always after me this time of year to buy something she can "give me" at Christmas.
Not like I need anything, but who doesn't like a brand new shiny toy at Christmas?

OK, a quick update . . . After using this with a little SE 6BQ5 tube amp for a while I've been listening to the E6 paired with my Aiyima A-07 and the sound is very nice indeed.

Compared to going straight into the A-07 the combo sounds more spacious and detailed and imaging is definitely better. The bass doesn't seem to be compromised at all, it's nice and solid without being over-emphasized or boomy. A definite improvement to my ears. YMMV, as always.

Of course, I'm a tube guy so it sounds a bit nicer to me when paired with the tube amp. :biggrin:
The A-07 does have considerably more power, as you would expect. It's playing louder than I would normally listen with the volume pot of the Aiyima set at 8:00 and the E6 set between 12:00 and 1:00.

I did order the Russian version of the 2J27L. Four NOS/NIB for $3.69 each shipped. The eBay seller was anker_6864 and they only took 2 1/2 weeks to arrive from Ukraine. Lots of them available from numerous sellers. I used a tubing cutter to remove the aluminum shell but I haven't tried them yet. The outside diameter of the aluminum shell is 1.25", BTW.

I'll eventually get this on the bench and try to figure out if the filament supply will allow me to use the very similar 2P29L but it's likely to be a while. So far the front facing output jacks aren't too bothersome although I can see where they might be in some setups. But when I get it opened up on the bench I'll also be looking to see if it would be feasible to drop the guts into a different chassis and re-wire them to some jacks on the back.

I'm looking forward to hearing about other's experiences.

Unfortunately, the first test was not good.
Damnedest thing actually.
Seems fine while the pre amp is on, but when I turn it off, there's a high pitched bell-like sound that starts up and keeps growing louder until I shut off the amp.

Never heard anything like it.
My amp is oscillating......after I shut off the pre???

The correct procedure for any preamp / amp combo is: (Amp) On last, off first.

I've noticed a tiny bit of very high frequency microphonics with mine but only when I tap the volume knob with no music playing. It's less evident if I tap the tubes themselves, with one being more susceptible than the other one. Tapping the chassis doesn't produce it and there is no issue in normal use with music playing.

Microphonics is generally very tube specific and I have not yet tried the Russian version of the tube but, as I say, it's not an issue in normal use.

These so-called "battery tubes" that have very low heater and current requirements do sometimes tend to be more microphonic. And directly heated tubes, in general, are also more prone to microphonics. But even common input tubes like the 12AX7 can sometimes be microphonic.

When I was breadboarding a preamp I tried the 1LE3, which is a similar directly heated "battery" type, and just lightly rubbing my finger on the front surface of the volume knob was clearly audible through the speakers. Oddly enough, there was no problem with music playing.

But the worst issue I've had with microphonics was with a preamp I built years ago that used 12B4A tubes. These are not "battery" types and are not directly heated, so not the "usual suspects". Their microphonics varied widely between individual tubes and I had to go through perhaps a couple of dozen of them to find a pair that were truly quiet. The worst of them would start howling loudly through the speakers when music was playing even though the preamp wasn't close to the speakers and was sitting on a terrazo stone floor which is impervious to vibration. Go figure.

But again, these 2J27Ls have worked fine in normal use.

Yeah, using a different combination of volume settings as you've done might solve the problem too without requiring you to turn off the amp.

As I say, microphonics is very unpredictable. In the set up I'm currently using I run the preamp volume between 11:00 and 1:00 and the volume on the Aiyima A-07 is set very low, maybe ~8:00 at most.
 
I got one! Lol.

It arrived last week. Plugged it in in the line from my PC. I removed my modded FX Audio Tube 03 and replaced it with this unit. The sound is similar to the Tube 03 and what I've done to it, but I will say that the bass seems a little more natural. That could be my settings on the Tube 03 and I'll look into that a little when I compare it a little more closely to this Nobsound unit. Initially, I'm enjoying it.

I've let it heat up and haven't turned it off in a few days now. Played some music thru it each day, so it probably has 8-10 hours of play time, but 120+hours of "on" time. There's no noise in it that I can detect. But I did move it once while I was playing music and when I was putting it down bumped a corner and got that ringing. I shut it down and let it settle and haven't touched it since. I don't like the front and back jacks. That's actually why I was moving it when I bumped it. I can live with it, but it's not how I wish it was organized.

But the sound is sweet and I so far don't mind not having tone controls on it. It's clear, natural, and balanced.
 
Alright FlaCharlie, I've got the Russian tubes. So how do I make sure I orient them correctly before inserting them in this unit? I have not removed the tubes that came installed yet.

I still haven't pulled the Chinese tubes yet but, based on measurements I took earlier I'm pretty sure you'll need to cut the aluminum cover off to get the tube to fit through the hole in the top of the chassis.

You'll need a tubing cutter in order to do this the "easy way". The outside diameter of the aluminum shell is 1.25".

If you look at the user manual that came with the preamp you can see that the socket has a keyway which, if the metal base was able to fit, would orient the tube. According to the manual, the stock tubes have been marked with two black dots and the tube must be inserted so that the black dots are on either side of the keyway.

Of course they added the dots and the Russian tubes won't have them so you need to mark them yourself. There are two ways to do this.

Using a magic marker, you could mark the two pins on either side of the keyway before you remove the tube from the aluminum shell. Or, you can always identify the two pins using a meter. Those pins are the heater pins and they are the only pins that have continuity between them, so that's a good way to double check.
 
Given the microphonics of these tubes, I'm wondering if the aluminum shell isn't there for a reason other than ease of replacement.
Just a thought, not like I know much of anything about the subject.

Would be nice to know if the Russian tubes are less microphonic.
I might at least consider wallowing out the case holes if that means you don't have to remove the shell.
Having two vaguely cigarette lighter looking things poking out the top wouldn't bother me in the least.

Btw, If you guys figure out which way to cock the tubes in order to remove them, I'd like to hear about it.
If nothing else so I can open the unit. I wanna see the guts.

I'm sure they would. I suppose you could also enlarge the diameter of the holes somehow. They obviously thought people would balk at using metal tubes, even though they don't actually glow at all since the heater voltage is so low.

Not sure how much shielding the chassis cover provides though. I haven't opened mine up yet, but it wouldn't hurt to try it. Let us know the results.

Not sure how much shielding the chassis cover provides though. I haven't opened mine up yet, but it wouldn't hurt to try it. Let us know the results.

Not really an A-B comparison. I assume you're referring to the use of the 6AK5 in the FX and similar devices. I don't own an FX but I did breadboard the FX circuit using the 6AK5 quite a while back when I was building a preamp.

I tried them with the very low stock FX voltages and with "normal" voltages that were more in line with the data sheet operating points. I've commented on my impressions numerous times in the FX thread so I won't repeat them here. If you do a search for my posts in that thread they're easy to find, including schematics of two higher voltage versions.

I know that @drjohnnyfeva has an FX, though, so perhaps he can offer a comparison. I think @45rpmspinner may have an FX too. If so, maybe he'll comment.

I will say that, in my experience, directly heated tubes do have a different sound to them. They excel in terms of clarity, detail and natural timbres.

Given the microphonics of these tubes, I'm wondering if the aluminum shell isn't there for a reason other than ease of replacement.
Just a thought, not like I know much of anything about the subject.

Would be nice to know if the Russian tubes are less microphonic.
I might at least consider wallowing out the case holes if that means you don't have to remove the shell.
Having two vaguely cigarette lighter looking things poking out the top wouldn't bother me in the least.

Btw, If you guys figure out which way to cock the tubes in order to remove them, I'd like to hear about it.

Loctal tubes in general were often used in mobile devices like car radios. Along with the locking feature they are very well braced internally. When the locking guide pin is present, they usually have a bump on the side of the base to indicate that you need to push in that (or from that??) direction sideways a bit to remove them from the socket easily.

You should be able to remove them by just pulling upward and rocking them slightly, just like any other tube, since the "locking" guide pin is no longer present. I haven't tried yet, though, so perhaps the sockets are tight.

When I breadboarded a preamp using the very similar 2P29L Russian tube I did not find it to be microphonic and I used it without the metal shell. Perhaps the Chinese versions are more microphonic, though. In general, Russian tubes are considered to be higher quality and better built than Chinese ones, even though the Chinese are direct copies based on technology that the Russians shared with them.

Also, inside the shell, there are several rings of cardboard placed around the top of the glass which prevent the glass tube from moving around inside the shell. This is necessary because the aluminum base is not fastened to the glass tube in any way. The pins just protrude through the base. This arrangement would also provide some damping so it's possible that microphonics would be reduced.

Did you prefer them to 6AK5’s?
