Non-Transferable Warranty - A cop-out?

I think you hit the nail on the head with the following: "Every manufacturer has to set a reserve in their financial statements for potential future warranty expenses. This policy helps them lower that reserve and show more profit."
Autos include transferable warranties because of the negative feedback they would receive in the market. I would guess stereo equipment mfgs don't think they suffer much from not offering transferable warranties.

I really think that a warranty should run for a specific length of time from the original purchase.

If you show up with a dated valid receipt, and the item is still within the warranty period, the warranty should be honoured.

Regardless of whether you are the original purchaser or the third owner having bought it off eBay.

However this is not the case.

It would appear that so long as the "non-transferability" is in the fine print, it's all legal.

Having said all that, I have never really had any trouble making a warranty claim when I have had the receipt, even on a second hand set of headphones.

The bottom line comes to whether a company is willing to stand behind their product. In a free market people who buy something, own it, and as such should be able to do as they please with it including selling it again, whether because they no longer want it or even to turn a profit. That is free trade. As such the same people should decide which companies deserve their business and a warranty is part of the product. If its a bad product, talk with your money.

Why, then, do you not seek the same internal consistency and ensure that all products you buy and use provide the same transferrable warranty you rail so passionately about? Looking at your listed stereo, McIntosh, Oppo, Gallo, and ATI all offer only non-transferable warranties to the original purchaser, and only through authorized stores. No gray market sales, no EBay purchases.

It seems you are not willing to practice what you preach.

Actually, ATI does offer a full transferable 7 year warranty. My McIntosh was purchased used, long after the warranty period had expired. I love my Gallo speakers, even though the warranty doesn't transfer. My post is a rant that I think it's a cop-out that some manufacturers don't allow the transfer of warranty with an invoice showing the original purchase came from an authorized dealer. Doesn't mean I won't buy something that I really like due to it not having the transferable warranty! Just thought if we all showed enough support, maybe manufacturers would take notice!

I am absolutely floored at the negative responses. I seriously don't understand why many here don't wish the same. What's your reason for not supporting this? Don't you think that Krell, Bryston, and ATI are doing the right thing by standing behind their product to subsequent owners as long as they can prove it was originally purchased from an authorized dealer?

Ok then, let me put it this way.

Why vociferously complain, rail, and rant about an unholy business practice, and yet not support the companies that do do what you want, while you support companies that do the exact opposite "bad" practice?

Cuz this is a hobby to achieve the best sound possible :music: I can certainly like a manufacturers product even though I don't like their warranty support. And most of the equipment I purchase are used and beyond their warranty period anyways.

McIntosh warranties are not transferable to protect the original owner from misrepresentation. Their language, not mine.

And I'm just wondering how that protects the original owner's interest! It seems to be protecting their own financials and interest!

Up here in Canada I bought the original 4024 Mach 1's and Radio Shack offered a "Lifetime" Guarantee, bought 2 sets actually.
Now R/S has departed from our lands many moons ago so how would I be able to use that Guarantee?
I no longer have them but if I did and something was wrong how would I avail of any repairs under their R/S Lifetime Guarantee....What is a Lifetime anyways?

Bouxy, we have a similar situation with the Radio Shack lifetimes tubes here in the States. RS no longer carries tubes, but the guarantee now means they will replace exhausted tubes one for one with new Sovtec tubes if manufactured. The same would hold true for your vanished Mach Ones if you got them to an appropriate US RS dealer. They would fix them once.

HamDog, ATI does have a transferable 7 year warranty, but it also has the worst new purchase warranty I have ever seen. What's up with a 3 month warranty? Did you purchase the 7 year transferable?

HamDog, ATI does have a transferable 7 year warranty, but it also has the worst new purchase warranty I have ever seen. What's up with a 3 month warranty? Did you purchase the 7 year transferable?

There is nothing to purchase! All they're saying is that to get the 7 year transferable warranty, you have to mail in your registration card and proof of purchase (receipt) from an authorized dealer within 90 days of purchase. There is no money involved.

And the warranty is valid for the first 90 days even if you didn't buy it from an authorized dealer!!! It just requires a receipt showing a new purchase from any dealer. And if you don't have a receipt, they use the manufacturing date.

Also, if you purchase your ATI product directly from their online store, you don't need to register as you're already in their system. The beautiful thing is they offer the exact same warranty on their refurbished products!!!

An LED light (on the power switch) acted up on my amp (started flickering). It was easy to replace as you just have to remove the front face plate with 4 screws to access it. I didn't want to lug a 100 lbs amp back to ATI, so I called them. They sent me a new power switch in the mail for free using priority mail! No need to take it in if you know what you're doing and want to replace it yourself. Most other manufacturers will require you to take in your unit for any issues if it's under warranty. Shipping big and heavy units is a royal pain!

ATI really stands behind their products. I am 100% satisfied with their customer service. It's truly one of the best in the industry.
