Norman Laboratories Model 335 CL Score Nirvana !!!

I saw these advertised on Omaha CL and me living in KC asked Bill (Very Nice Guy) if he would split the difference and he met me in Rockport Missouri Sunday. Opened up the back of his Cadillac SUV and behold the most beautiful set of Mint and I mean Mint Norman Lab Model 335 Circa 1991...10" Acoustic Suspension Floor Standers measuring 32" H x 13" W x 9" Deep. Stellar Cabinetry. Sound is just unbelievable. I currently have my Phase Tech PC 8.5s up for sale after acquiring these Gems. Tight Musical Bass. The 10" Woofer looks like the KLH Model 6 Inverted Cloth Woofers with Deeper Excursion. These are Advent Killers...KLH Killers and anything from the East Coast Killers...Mids are nice and balanced as well and the tweeters appear to be Phillips which are very clear and detailed. These ar 4ohm but very efficent...How do they do that?...My KA-9100 doesn't break a sweat powering these... $200 Paid more than I liked but figured what the hell.....225 miles round trip and I am in Audio Nirvana...Man...Norman Labs made some good stuff!!!!!!!! Did I tell you already that I love these speakers? Any time you can find some Norman Labs Grab em'.................Wish there was more info out there on this great speaker company.

Very nice! Beautiful cabs (like all Normans). Not sure if that is an original woofer, but hey if it sounds good...
AKer Basicblues could tell you I'd bet, in case you're curious.
 
Wow ... didn't take Rick long to get pics and a review up!

I got to hear those yesterday for a couple of hours. Combine what I like best about my Bozak Tempos and New Large Advents into one speaker, and you've got these Normans. Deep tight bass, smooth mids and clear highs.

I believe I heard these speakers again this evening when I drove past his house on the way home from work.

Welcome to the Norman Lab fan club. To bad that they went out of business. They made some good speakers.
 
I talked to my Cousin Carl yesterday who is holding a set of Model 9's for me. I am trying to set aside some time to schedule a trip to Ardmore, OK to pick them up. I might talk Mr.Bill into going with. On the trip back maybe we can figure a way to hook em' up and listen to them on the way back in our vehicle.:yes:
 
Beautiful speakers!! I have never heard a pair of Normans, but a good friend had been wanting me to help him build a system and he said he wanted Norman speakers. He had grown up in Oklahoma and had once owned a pair. Sadly my friend passed away on Feb. 10th, so his preferred system never materialized. In the meantime I had hooked him up with a vintage Sansui receiver and some Mission speakers. I hope to one day own a pair of Normans to hear what my friend always raved about.

If you guys are going to pass through Joplin on your way to Ardmore, let me know if you wanna stop by. You could either stop by for a listen or we could meet up for a meal.
 
really nice looking and I would imagine great sounding. I'm always drawn to speakers with great cabinetry and those look to be in great shape. Looks like a little discoloration where the grill area is but easily fixed. Very nice snag :thmbsp:

You probably know this but Model Nines are three times bigger, and for a 2-way system they're amazing. Up until recently they were the best I'd ever heard. 2 woofs in front and one in the back that can be switched to a passive radiator. They handle a lot of power but not very efficient.

HEY! I wondered how that project of yours turned out. Glad you're so happy. I was at Goodyear in Beaumont last weekend and happened to notice they had a pair of Tens built in '77 (I could tell from the tweeter block and bare MDF front baffle). He said he was asking $395 :yikes:. They were very dirty, and the owners dog had peed on them, damaging the bottom edge. So I passed. They're similar to yours, but 2-way with 2 tweets that play everything from 1500 Hz on up.

I found mine on CL for $50 and offered another $50 for the buyer to meet me locally. Kudos to the AK crew for letting me know I should GRAB these!

Similar to your story, she pulls up in a Mercedes station wagon and tells me she has lugged the Normans all over the U.S. and doesn't want to bother with them OR fix the surrounds.

Then she says they bought a Bose system to replace them... to which I replied "Here's your hundred dollars, Thanks!" :banana:

Em R Schweet. I would not worry about the discoloration, but in my experience, it is not an easy fix, and I'd leave them be.
It is the typical lacquer topcoat fading over a few decades of normal indoor light, and to me it's like a distinguishing :tresbon: touch of grey on the sides. Know-what-I-mean? hint-hint, nudge-nudge.

Until recently when I heard a pair of B&Ws hooked up to an MC402, the Nines were the best speakers I'd ever heard, with the possible exception of the Norman System 12. Granted that's not saying a whole lot... I haven't listened to very many of the world's best speakers, but now I can say I've heard XRT2Ks. Even Norman 9's and 12's don't compare.:D
 
First post for me on AK. I have a pair of Model Nines that are pretty much mint except for the foam surrounds disintegrating on me. I have googled up some fairly promising fixes but thought I would ask the ones who have been there and done this. I am pretty sure I can do the job myself but I am a bit skeptical about doing my part in providing the surround provider with the proper dimensions and other speaker specs they are asking for. I will try and proved pics later this week. Thanks in advance for your insight and advice.

I am also refoaming the woofers from some Model 10 speakers. I am getting my surrounds from a fellow AKer. If you want more information, send me a private message and I will give you some information about sourcing the replacement surrounds. Also, you will probably get more help by starting a new thread, rather than resurrecting and old one. Better yet, search this website for posts, using the keyword "refoam". Use the Google search option; it works better.

Norman Labs EQ model 5?

Anyone have any info on this unit? I own one & would like to try it out, but not sure where to begin - anyone have a manual or other specs?
