Northern electric r4054c tube amp , any info

I picked this up today out of a northern electric tone cabinet from i,m guessing the thirties.What info do you guys have on this.

I just read about this somewhere today, & thought it was here at AK, but not sure. :scratch2: What I read was, Northern Electric was the Canadian branch of Western Electric, which you've most likely heard of. It looks like a scroe to me, congrats! :thmbsp:

It does appear to be the Canadian arm of the old Western Electric. This company was, of course, a separate company that, ultimately re-entered the US and world markets as Northern Telecom, which was later renamed Nortel, which is now being dismanteled and sold off. Google the name and you'll find lots of articles about their demise.

BTW, the amp in the pics, I would expect to have been part of the 48 volt switching systems, used by the original rotary-dial telephones - anyone remember them? These would have been line repeaters or line drivers out to subswitching stations or to those little boxes along the road with lots of wires patched into them - anyone remember them?

Bandwidth for these were typically spec'd at 300 hz-3000hz driving a 600 ohm load.

As a comparison, our venerable old McIntosh tube amps of the 50s and 60s were designed to be used in this way but with far higher bandwidth.

I pulled it out of a tone cabinet used for organs not telephones,you may be thinking of some thing other than the thread

Looks newer than '30s to me. More like '50s. I don't know about the silver painted transformers, I've never seen any painted that way.

Do you think Western and Northern electric only built telephone equipment? Google is quite enlightening on the subject.
