Not Enough Appreciation for Zenith

Just wanted to share this one, because I see very little on this receiver. My dad had a model just like this when he was a teenager, so I'd assume is was made around 1978-1980. Unfortunately, he threw his away a few years ago, not thinking it was worth anything :bash:. I tracked down one through Ebay a few weeks ago, and got what I think was the TOTL model from Zenith at the time the MC7050.

From what I've read, they were manufactured by samsung(?) for Zenith, and this one is around 40-45wpc. It definitely needs a recap on the inside, but without that, it still sounds nice. I normally run a Sansui 5000a, and this thing definitely gives it a run for its money. Plus, its got the classic silver face look, and looks super sharp, IMO.

Anyone else have any Zenith stuff like this? Thoughts on them? Also, if anyone has any resource as far as manuals go for one, that would be killer. Just though I'd share an extremely underrated receiver. :thmbsp:

Never knew! I like its look. Whatcha got it hooked to, and what's your opinion on sound? Can you compare it against other receivers that you've heard?
 
I had some giant Zenith Allegro 4000 speakers about 2 years ago, I thought they absolutely ruled at the time, and they definitely sounded better than the Pioneer CS-88'S I also had

The only set of speakers I have at the moment are Dynaco A25s. My other receiver is a Sansui 5000a, and the Zenith definitely gives it a run for it's money. I haven't really gotten a chance to do a really critical listen, but I have 0 complaints so far from what I've heard come out of the Zenith. I was definitely surprised when I first heard it. Sounded very clear and concise. Can't wait to hear it after a recap!
 
Very sharp indeed, I love the looks of those receivers, they are pretty darn good performers also. I had a MC 7040 in my first garage that ran for years without fail.
 
The Zenith Allegro speakers had Rola drivers in them, very efficient and great sounding. Their better consoles and compacts were among the best, most all Zenith equipment is superb. Their build quality and craftsmanship was superb in their class. I love Zenith who's quality went in before the Zenith name went on.

I have not thought about that line for a long time.

And the 7050 receiver pictured in this thread? Amazing. I'd own one in a heartbeat.

The only Zenith gear I have is an old 25 inch television from 1995 that just won't quit, and a Zenith Hi Def 1080 DVD / CD that performs incredibly well.

I am reminded of the Zenith ad slogan from the 60's and 70's. "Zenith. The quality goes in, before the name goes on."

I had a Zenith cassette deck some years ago, and it was well built. It's faceplate was a match for the receiver in the OP.
 
As some asked for, here's a picture of the internals from above. I was amazed when the first time I opened her up. The only other amp I have ever really seen inside was my Sansui 5000a, and the arrangement was much more complex in the Sansui. The Zenith looks so simple in comparison. Its simplicity is inspiring me to tackle a recap on it.

Seven years later...
Found this thread today after a quick stop at the local Goodwill. See attached pics, 10 bucks. a few of the speaker-terminals on the back look like someone tried to rip the cables out, but apart from that, missing a couple knobs, but it powers up. It's still in the back of the 4Runner, but if it works, I'll clean it up, get some new knobs, get the speaker terminals fixed, maybe relaminate it with actual walnut. Sure like the look of it. Mostly I just like a good resurrection project. I'm not practiced at soldering nor do I know how to tell if any of the caps need replacing, so I might have someone locally check it out for me.

Encontré este hilo hoy después de una breve parada en Goodwill local. Ver fotos adjuntas, 10 dólares. Algunos de los terminales de altavoz en la parte posterior parecen como si alguien hubiera intentado arrancar los cables, pero aparte de eso, faltan un par de perillas, pero se enciende. Todavía está en la parte trasera del 4Runner, pero si funciona, lo limpiaré, conseguiré algunas perillas nuevas, arreglaré los terminales de los altavoces, tal vez lo volveré a laminar con nuez real. Seguro como se ve. Sobre todo me gusta un buen proyecto de resurrección. No tengo experiencia en la soldadura ni sé cómo saber si alguna de las tapas necesita ser reemplazada, por lo que podría pedirle a alguien localmente que la revise por mí.
