Now this looks interesting Carver Amazing in CT

My nephew fond that pair, but at the price they were ok but not a steal. Those are the smaller "Amazings", at 4' instead of 5' tall. It seems the black finish is a bit less popular than the wood finish, and the seller doesn't know if they work or not. Apparently the ribbons are fairly easy to fix if there is a problem, but the woofers can be problematic if anything more than foam needs work.

If you are local and can bring a source and amp to check them out, then they can be a very good deal. I think the seller would be willing to negotiate down a bit, since he is out of his league on these (I told him what they were, and gave him some price ranges if they were perfect functionally). If they need work, either cosmetically or functionally, then you want to do it as a labor of love. I won't be up to visit my nephew for at least a month, and he didn't want to take a chance on holding them that long (he's an audio novice, and scrambling for work since he was just laid off).

I think it is the other way around. The woofers are easy to re-foam (but you might be out of luck if the vc's are cooked), while the ribbons are difficult to repair. The last time I heard of anyone offering a ribbon repair service on these, he wanted something like $200 each.

Thanks for posting that ribbon repair. We might need it one day. Way too many speakers really. I also never ventured in ribbon land so I will stay with the boxes for now.

Worth noting also that they aren't a stick them in the system and settle back to listen speaker. All dipoles need room around them and are very placement sensitive, and my experience of the Carvers suggests to me they are pretty system dependent. I heard them at a good stereo store but in a small room with lots of hard surfaces and found them so bright and harsh I couldn't stand them. I can't imagine that that's what they sound like set up properly -- just pointing out they need more care than standard boxes.

OEM replacement woofers for the Amazings are available for a very reasonable price from an outfit in CA. I think the WP-1220's were $35 each (they are also used in the Amazing Silvers) when I got them last fall, at that price why bother with refoaming? Oh btw - they are keepers and I think that any working pair available for this price is a no brainer. Someone should get these if the ribbons are good.

If you want to buy brand new OEM drop in replacement woofers, contact http://www.dynavox.com/

Click on products, then 12" woofer. The replacement for the Original woofer is Part # SW-1220FL and the replacement for the Platinum woofer is Part # WP-1220. These are the exact same as the ones that came with your Amazings and they only cost $25.00 each.

Funny Sancho, Carver Amazing Silvers (like the ones in the picture) are what I ended up with... :D

Got mine for $200, then another $350 for 6 New OEM woofers, so I've got about $550 total in them. I sold my AR9's after a few weeks with the amazings and stepped up to a bigger amp to drive them.

Oh, I did not realize that these are silvers. I know you upgraded to those. It seems you like them right?

I have a pair of these Amazing Silvers. They are that good. Mine have fresh woofers too.

I'm surprised these are still there. Even if they were a trainwreck and needing a full going over these are worth every penny. Amazing they are with a good stout amp. Forget about these with any reciever, or any weak amp less than 200W/channel at 8 ohms. The pair I have light right up nicely when I apply one of my Crown Macro-Tech 2402's to them. :D

Happy Hunting!

+1

I just listened to Anthem Of The Sun on a pair of Amazing Silvers, with a Pro-ject tube se II phono preamp and a Carver PM-1.5 (350 WPC) amp.

wow

You could get the 5' ribbons (10 segments) with 4 woofers, or the 4' ribbons (8 segments) with 3 woofers. Don't know the exact model numbers or names, but both were available.

The pair in CT was apparently sold for $325 a few days ago, but the seller hasn't yet killed the ad.

5 foot continuous ribbon is the Platinum.

4 foot continuous ribbon is the Silver.

2 x 30" ribbons is the Original Amazing Loudspeaker.

I've had the Platinums for about 20 years now. People come over and hear them, and then start looking for their own.
