Ohm Walsh 2's

I have just been offered a pair of ohm walsh 2's for free. I haven't seen them in person, but they are single owner, and in the picture, look to be in great shape. I currently have a set of Koss cm1020's which I love. I've have never listened to the ohm walsh series, and I'm not sure I have a receiver that it's strong enough to drive them. I currently have a Marantz 2238b. Anyone have feedback on the walsh 2's, I'm going to get them(the price is right) but I'm not sure they are a good fit for my setup.

^^^^^ This ^^^^^ They'll sound ok with a receiver, but will really sing with sufficient power.

That was a hard lesson for me to learn. I love the Marantz B series receivers (see my avatar for proof), but the biggest upgrade to my sound (besides getting great speakers) was ditching the receivers for a decent tube amp.

Agreed with all of the above.

WORST case scenario is you do not like them or you currently have no room in the budget for more watts. You sell them for a very lovely profit.

Run Forest.... :)

Here's the spec sheet from Ohm.

They're 4 ohm and 88 db efficient, which isn't too bad. What worries me is that Ohm recommends 125 watts for them. Your Marantz has about 1/3 of that. They won't fry the 2238B, but I wouldn't crank them up if I were you. More risk to the speakers if they're sent a clipped signal from the Marantz.

I have the 2XO's and they are my favorite speaker i havent heard the 2's but they are suppose to be better or at least the same. XO's only need 35w to drive them the 2's probably need a bit more to really shine. The 2XO have cloth surrounds but the 2's are foam and probably in need of a refoam. The foam on my 4"s was shot when i got them, i sent them to ohm and they replaced it and balanced them. if you mention AK they will do the refoam service for $150

Walsh speakers can change your life. I've had 2's, 4's, and F's (still have the F's). The 2's are a fantastic speaker that delivers a lot more than the package would suggest. It's a 4 ohm load, but it's not one of those 'difficult' 4 ohm loads to drive. I think you should get a good appreciation for them with your Marantz, they really come alive with more power but they sound great with moderate power too.

The only caveat with Walsh drivers is that you really need them off the wall. 2-3 feet from the back wall is minimal to make them sound good. If you put them against a wall, or stuck in a corner, you'll miss most of what they're intended for.

bs

IIRC, Walsh 2s are thermally protected, if you push them too hard they will just get quiter until the limiter cools down. I've never had this happen to any of my 2s, but did on a pair of 4s.
I wouldn't worry about that receiver/speaker pairing, I've used smaller receivers to drive 2s... just use common sense, if it doesn't sound clean, turn the volume

I disagree, ime, and as Ohm suggests, Walsh speakers are tuned to work best within a foot of the back wall, but spaced pretty far away from side walls, and a little wider spaced than most conventional speakers.

Because of this, they often work best on the longer wall.

I remember hearing Ohm Walsh speakers as a kid when I was probably 12. It was literally a life changing experience as I did not realize music could sound that good. The owner (a friend of my friends older brother) was cranking Steve Millers' Abracadabra. Hearing those Ohms launched my stereo obsession.

I have a significant collection of gear, I bought my Walsh2's new back around 1980 and they're the only thing I've held onto over the decades.
They're worthy.
