"Old" C&W

Theophilus Punoval

The Queen says it's OK...
I like country music pre 1965. There have been some great tunes since, of course, but my interest lies in those years from 1950 or so until 1965. No disrespect to Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, JC or Willie.

Imagine being a truck driver in the 80s who seriously disliked guys like Bocephus.

I liked Hank Snow, Hank Locklin, Faron Young, Cowboy Copas, Ferlin Husky, Lefty Frizzel, Dave Dudley, Patsy Cline and many more.

Just can't get into the later stuff, though.

my love for Porter Wagoner is well documented. i also like "whispering" Bill Anderson, Ferlin Husky, Jim Reeves and don't forget Eddy Arnold!

Ernest Tubb, Kittie Wells, Hank Williams, Billie Grammer, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, Uncle Dave Macon, Grandpa Jones, Mel Tillis

Don't know if you include bluegrass, but if so, Bill Monroe (of course), Jimmy Martin, Stanley Brothers, Reno and Smiley...

How about the Carter Family?

Or Western Swing, a la Bob Wills?

I have to agree with you about country music after about 1965.

Pretty much with you on this one. Throw in the Sons of the Pioneers, and Marty Robbins

I remember "The Grand Ole Opry" on the radio of dad's 1951 Mercury on Route 66 going from Chicago to St.Louis around 1953-56 in the summer time. Anything after that is just not country enough.

I have a collection I know you'd love from my dad's old tapes. It's on a R2R that was put out by Radio Shack believe it or not, but it still sounds pretty good. Do you have a tape player of some kind?

I remember hearing Arthur Godfrey on the radio of my old man's 1953 Plymouth on Rt. 5 going from Syracuse to Utica around 1957 in the summertime. Does that count?

Great thread! I grew up in Tampa...but my mom was raised in Jackson, Tennesee!!! Our house was always filled with Wanda Jackson, Hank Snow, The Light Crust Doughboys (yup, she was spinnin' 78s as well as LPs), and tons of early Marty Robbins. I really made fun of her musical tastes...but I'll be damned if I don't love that stuff now. Do yourself a favor: start hunting for Bear Family boxsets...amazing multi-disc sets devoted to early country. Not cheap, but sometimes you can find a used box.

Chick Hall's SURF CLUB in Bladensburg, MD

Back in the 50's, this was THE C&W club in the Washington, DC area.
Jim Reeves, Lefty Frizzell, Patsy Cline, and other C&W greats would hold jam sessions there.
I saw the great rockabilly guitarist, the late DANNY GATTON, there in the 70's.
As far as I know, the Surf Club is still open for business?

Seen Earnest Tubb, Hank Snow, Minnie Pearl, Ferlin Husky, Porter Wagner, Grampa Jone With String Bean and Little Jimmie Dickens at the Old Ryman back in the late 50's when our car broke down in Nashville so my Mom took us. I didn't know what I was looking and listening to at the time but I remember it like it was yesterday and always will!

Here in the Chicago area, radio station WDCB has a show Wednesday evening at 9pm, called "When Country Wasn't Cool" that plays only tunes up until 1974. I believe they stream over the internet and I can tell you from experiance, its a great show. :thmbsp:
