"Old" C&W

Back in the 50's, this was THE C&W club in the Washington, DC area.
Jim Reeves, Lefty Frizzell, Patsy Cline, and other C&W greats would hold jam sessions there.
I saw the great rockabilly guitarist, the late DANNY GATTON, there in the 70's.
As far as I know, the Surf Club is still open for business?

I believe it closed in 2007, but Chick Hall Jr. is still playing in these parts. I saw him at the grand opening of the new Joe's Record Paradise in Silver Spring, MD. He's a very good roots/blues guitarist in the same vein as Gatton and Buchanan.

As for the OP, I'm in complete agreement. I love old country but cannot stomach the overproduced commercial dreck coming out of Nashville these days.

BTW, a friend of mine from the Shenandoah Valley once dated Patsy Cline way back when. At the time of her death, her funeral was the largest ever held in the State of Virginia.

Just closed down within the last year. Went there w/Jack Lord and Similost to see The Slickee Boys Christmas before last, and to the Buddy Holly tribute a month after.
Jr. still tears it up on occasion in some of the local bars

I love so many of the greats already mentioned, but let's not forget Johnny Horton and the great story-telling songs he did!

I like country music pre 1965. There have been some great tunes since, of course, but my interest lies in those years from 1950 or so until 1965. No disrespect to Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, JC or Willie.

Imagine being a truck driver in the 80s who seriously disliked guys like Bocephus.

I liked Hank Snow, Hank Locklin, Faron Young, Cowboy Copas, Ferlin Husky, Lefty Frizzel, Dave Dudley, Patsy Cline and many more.

Just can't get into the later stuff, though.

You gotta go to Jerry's records in Pittsburg PA...........we has probably 100,000 or more of old school Honky Tonk and CW music from 50s and up. He has a entire dedicated section with an expert on staff. Hope your close enough to go sometime.

Here in the Chicago area, radio station WDCB has a show Wednesday evening at 9pm, called "When Country Wasn't Cool" that plays only tunes up until 1974. I believe they stream over the internet and I can tell you from experiance, its a great show. :thmbsp:

Thanks for the tip! :thmbsp:
