Once more Sansui transistor substitutions

I dislike the exorbitant price Mouser charges for P&P though. RS are better on that front, but not as well stocked as Mouser. If I can I try and buy from smaller dealers as they tend to be a lot more helpful (and cheaper!) We need more small independent electronics suppliers!

So do I, and I made a comment about it in feedback to them when it was £50 minimum order for zero shipping cost. Anyway my next order to them was below that and I got zero shipping cost for that order only, as a thank you for the feedback, signed off by the head of Mouser UK! And subsequently the minimum order value for shipping to the UK was dropped to £33 !!! result. :king: (and Digikey was forced to follow suit! :D )

So, save up your purchases, and buy at least £33 a time from Mouser and everything looks better. As for RS they ARE convenient and quick, but they have a limited range and I HATE that a lot of products must be bought in 5's, 10's, 100's or more - ridiculous for hobbyists.

Note: I also buy from Farnell (£20 minimum order value unless you have a credit account). They have a much better range than RS, and above £20 the shipping is free!

I have a few other preferred suppliers too ;)

Mouser are even cheaper now. Last time I ordered which was just over a week ago, the charge was £12, and free postage with orders over £30. Still steep however if you only want a few components. I’m also exactly with you on RS, who I’ve also complained to about where they offer those dreaded multiples of items. I hate having to order 5 caps when I only need one. Why don’t they just put the price up a little more?

There’s a tiny electronics store in Solihull called Bitsbox who I also use. The guy who runs it (called Bob) will order in components if he thinks he can shift them. Most of his customers tend to be guitar pedal makers and old radio enthusiasts, so he did get a load of ELNA Silmics and Panasonic FC's for me recently as the aforementioned like to use them too.

Someone know who sells SANSUI AU-819 set of the most important parts to repair? ....I have a problem with the glue.

Thanks

Please start your own thread.

The end of the thread discussing Transistor Substitution is not the place for a post about replacement parts for an AU-819.

Welcome to AK and the Exclusively Sansui Forum.

Hey all hope your staying well. What better hobby to have in a time like this. I'm restoring a co-workers Realistic STA-78. I'm looking to replace complimentary pair Transisitors 2SD438/2SB560 in the amplifier stage. I've seen that the KSC2316/KSA916YTA have been suggested. The later is still available, but the KSC2316 is obsolete at both Mouser & Digikey. Was wondering if this one would work? I'm not real good with the Transistors specs so hoping someone could help.

BDent has the 2SD438 https://www.bdent.com/2sd438-sanyo-low-frequency-power-amp-transistor.html But the 2SB560 is out of stock.

Thanks guys. I'm not familiar with either CE or BDent. Was hoping to find something at Mouser since I already have the caps for this unit in que. you know, kinda expensive to order just a few transistors when you add the shipping. I'll check them out. Any idea if the BC640 and it's complimentary would be a good substitute?

CE has both
Not affiliated.

I'm slightly suspicious of any company that doesn't show who makes the semiconductors it sells (and only provides basic sketches). Probably would be safer to email to ask before proceeding? Only one Google review too, and that's four years old.

You have to match this:
(2SB560)

Maximum Collector Power Dissipation (Pc): 0.75 W

Maximum Collector-Base Voltage |Vcb|: 100 V

Maximum Collector-Emitter Voltage |Vce|: 80 V

Maximum Emitter-Base Voltage |Veb|: 5 V

Maximum Collector Current |Ic max|: 0.7 A

Max. Operating Junction Temperature (Tj): 125 °C

Transition Frequency (ft): 50 MHz

Collector Capacitance (Cc): 30 pF

Forward Current Transfer Ratio (hFE), MIN: 60

With this:
(BC640)

Maximum Collector Power Dissipation (Pc): 1 W

Maximum Collector-Base Voltage |Vcb|: 80 V

Maximum Collector-Emitter Voltage |Vce|: 80 V

Maximum Emitter-Base Voltage |Veb|: 5 V

Maximum Collector Current |Ic max|: 1 A

Max. Operating Junction Temperature (Tj): 150 °C

Transition Frequency (ft): 50 MHz

Forward Current Transfer Ratio (hFE), MIN: 40

They both look pretty good to me. Try it and see what happens. Cricklewood in London have the 2SB560 in stock. They were always a decent little seller. But I couldn't say if parts these days are Chinese or not.

I thought the same thing when I visited their site. Looks quite generic. Not sure what your really buying. They could be ligit, I just haven't bought from them.

On the first page of their online catalogue they show a list of the manufacturer's whose products you can expect to find for sale - and also a disclaimer that they are not 'authorised resellers' for any of them - I thinks that's fair enough. Also they are used quite often by members on here and I haven't heard any complaints. :)

Wow Tom, thank you for the extensive info. Those were some of the parameters I was looking at. I'm still learning this stuff. I have caps picked out already at Mouser, so was hoping to find something their, simply to save the cost of shipping on a few transistors. :)

Fair enough, John
Thank you for weighing in. Wasn't trying to disparage them. This unit is not a high value unit, so trying to keep cost down by getting everything from the same source. Any thoughts on the BC640 and it's complimentary, being a good match for the originals 2SB560/2SD438
Bob

Are the originals functioning as driver transistors in your unit? - and do they get hot?

I would be inclined to use KSA1220 and KSC2690 for those - the increased package size (TO-92L) is often no compensation for how hot they can get in operation in some locations. But that's the key to choosing the right replacements how and where they are being used. ;)

Sorry for late response was on a jodsite all day. Thank you for that suggestion. Searching AK, I've seen where you also suggested the KSC2383 and it's complimentary. Would you suggest one over the other? Both sets are available at Mouser.

You are correct. these are driver transistors in the main amp. I can't really say as far as if they run hot. didn't really check that out ,but will. The amp board is in a wide open space. so no issues of hot, tight spaces. I attached the Transistor list from the service manual with them highlighted and the specs for the originals. Thank you for the help.
