ONKYO A-8500 with weird problems

I have a Onkyo A-8500 that's never worked when I've had it.
It has a knob that bypasses the tone controll and balance, it can be set to tone or direct.

When in directed mode only the right speaker works. When in tone mode both speakers work but still some strange things. The treble and bass control only affect the right speaker. When i turn the balance knob all the way to the left only the left speaker is playing but when i turn it all the way to the right both speakers play like the knob would be in the middle. When pressing the -20db mute button the left speaker plays but not the right. The only way to make it play like normal is to have it in the tone mode and don't adjust, balance, bass or treble and then it plays great. I have taken it apart and cleaned all potentiometers and buttons, and looked at everything and i can't spot any bad welds or burned components or anything else.
The problem haven't been the same all time, when i got it sometimes worked in direct mode and after every time I've had it apart the problem changes slightly.

I don't have any cluy what the problem could be, anyone here that have any suggestions or experience with this amplifier?

I had both the TX-8500 MKII and the TX-6500 MKII, and still have the TX-4500 MKII. When they (all three of them) have/had trouble playing from both channels it was always cured by pushing in/out on the tape 1-2-3 buttons several times (Tape 3 is sometimes labeled ESP). The board they hook up to is way down low on the bottom and is hard to get at to clean, so the switches are usually just dirty.

Well I just noticed you were talking about the A-8500 integrated amp, Not the TX-8500 receiver, so Apples to Sausages :( Check the two blue ribbon connectors that run from the front panel switch to the selector on the board (the blue bands in the pic). My old Onkyo P-306RS preamp used the ribbon connectors and one got kinked-stuck and did not move the switch all the way to the position selected. I put some Deoxit fader lube along the ribbon and in the switch on the board and worked it back and forth 5 bazillion times until is was working smoothly.

Also make sure the red & white wires in the center section are making good contact with the board- they loosen up over many many heating/cooling cycles.
