Onkyo CP-1044F - is it any good?

Hello everyone,

This is my first post and I am a newbie.
I just bought the Onkyo CP-1044F for $50, it is in great shape, but I can’t find any info on it. Is it any good? It also came with an AT cartridge and I don’t know how to identify it. Should I upgrade the cartridge?

Can't comment too much on the turntable, although it looks decent for $50. The cartridge looks like an AT-110E with the stylus-guard removed. It would be a good idea to at least replace the stylus, as you don't know how worn it is. Alternatively, a change of cartridge may be worthwhile. The Onkyo's arm is probably of the low-mass variety that would benefit from a cartridge with a high-compliance stylus (soft suspension) and I don't think the AT is high-compliance. Perhaps take a look at the Ortofon OM10 or OM20, depending on budget.

Thank you so much, this really helps me out! I think I’ll order the OM10 cartridge for $70 and see how the turntable sounds like.

Does anyone know about the CP-1044F, is it a decent unit or should I buy a new one for $400?

I think I have the Onkyo CP-1046F (similar to your I think). It is decent, but there is a little white plastic gear for the automatic function that goes brittle and crumbles - disabling the automatic functions. I have seen replacement gears (3D printed, I think) on the big auction site, but never purchased one. My Onkyo sits on a shelf and I haven't pulled it out in a long time. I do remember it had an AT cart in it and it sounded good though. Personally, I don't think the Onkyo is anything special, but I could be wrong.

Looks like it was decent, especially for the money spent. It has good specs according to VinylEngine.com and Quartz Locked is always a plus. Go with the OM10 and see what you think. If you remove the cartridge you have, the model number should be on the top part.

Great, thanks. It is my first player and I still have to get my system together, can’t wait to listen to Pink Floyd remastered, that’s my motivation...

At least around here a decently functional turntable of any quality is hard to come by at $50. I would have probably jumped on it to resell at $100 if nothing else.
