Onkyo DX-1400 CD player - need help

Hi there,

I am going to attempt to get my Onkyo DX-1400 single disc player working again. My father bought it new in the late 80s or early 90s. Powers on fine but if I put in a clean disc, I don’t hear any sounds and the drawer opens again after a few seconds. If I wanted to clean the lens, how do I do this? And what else should I do?

I will upgrade the opamps someday but for now I just want to get it working again.

If there has already been a thread about this, please let me know. I didn’t see anything on a search.

Couple of things to look at, the belt might be slipping and not loading all the way to let the unit start. Or it could be the door switch or contacts are needing cleaned so the player will start looking for the disc. I would check these things as you say draw reopens after sever seconds.
 
Clean the lens first..u'll see it when you take the lid off & open the tray..
I just use a little windex on a cotton swab
 
In the digital sources forum there is a sticky thread that starts "Lazerology". It outlines a pretty much step by step procedure for diagnosing disc reading problems. It turns out that all CD players work pretty much the same. With refreshingly, very few surprises. I had a Sharp CD player that did pretty much what you describe. I junked it and later bought a new CD player. Shortly after that I discovered that thread. I feel like if I had seen that before I might have been able to save the old Sharp. Good luck with it.

This all looks promising. Will report back once I crack it open. Thanks for pointing me in this direction.
 
So an update with this. I took it apart today and cleaned the laser with alcohol. Put a CD in and it read it! Proceeded to play two separate CDs in full and read them all the way through. Sounded great.

… and now the tray won’t open. It won’t release the CD either.

Any ideas on what’s going on? Motor is definitely trying to open it, from what I can tell.

Thanks @dlucy. I found that if I a) unplug it and after a few hours, b) plug it in and c) turn it on, the door will open. I'll let it play for a while, change out a few discs, then the door won't open again. Repeat a, b, and c. I'm assuming I'm resetting something hardware-wise.
