ONKYO integra TX-DS989 Help solve no sound

Have you tried with tone bypass/direct selected?

I wasn't able to find anything on this option.[/QUOTE]
Looks like it's called SOURCE DIRECT, try that

If I am getting good relay switch sounds (one click at when I switch on, and one click a few seconds later) are these probe points still meaningful to check? There access is really tough and will require quite a bit of disassembly.
The protection relay should click after 5 seconds of power on, which is probably your second click.
That leave power supply to the opamp, the +/-15V only needing to be checked.

You could try a master reset. You may loose some stored info like radio presets...

Certainly try the ipod or whatever handy into main-in links as per peter halls suggestion
Service manual shows unit has own headphone amp fed before pre-out.

IMO caps shown look okay. some cap don't have the x hatch. sleeves look good.
Look in the manual for factory reset sequence. I've had 3 dif brands names one onk. and none powered on with stand-by initiated. Fan won't come on till certain temp is reached.

I plug in the unit and push the "Power" switch in. The LED beside "Standby" comes on. I then push the "stand by" button in and the front panel comes on and I then can select settings, choose inputs etc. So that all works. I do notice however that the fan never comes on, maybe meaning the power is not getting to the op amps.
I still get the hum coming through to the speakers sometimes.

Ok, part success! I figured out how to set "DIRECT" listening mode (rather than options like Stereo, Surround etc.) combined with plugging in my Tape player and I can get the tape to play to the speaker. The Volume seems low compared to what I'd expect, but I may just need to play with settings. If I scroll out of "Direct" mode to any of the other options (like Stereo, Mono, Surround etc.), I just get a loud hum. It seems setting "Direct" mode to any of the channels works (Tape 1, Tape 2, FM were quickly checked). Why does Direct do this?
By the way, I also did the Master reset which is hard to ascertain whether it had an effect or not. I suspect that the main thing was selecting "direct" and getting a reliable source input.

Regarding the hum, is it possible that when I was initially trying to figure out the issue and playing around with speaker and input options that I calibrated to the would be low/weak background hum and sort of dialled it in?... or something along those lines. Not sure that makes sense because then my Tape or other inputs would be abnormally high volume rather than low volume.

Anyway, great help getting to this point in the debug.
Questions I'm solving are why the DSP options other than "Direct" don't work and only yield the annoying hum ... probably linked to the seemingly low volume output to speaker (eg. level 25 on the Volume display where 100 is MAX is just audible)

I have an onkyo, too. Your unit may have speaker adjust button.. and all the speakers 5.1? are on.. so w/o all connected getting hum not connected. I think that is factory reset mode, too all will be on as I reset mine and were highlighted... but you selected direct so 2ch mode, connected. I press speaker adjust and shows the 5.1 speaker icons. then I press +or - to select/deselect.
Hope that works. or user manual explain your set up.

low volume.. generally you prob. see 40-50 as norm.. low 25? on speakers same with me and others.. avr are like that.

In my limited experience, "Direct" simply bypasses the tone control circuitry. So perhaps you might want to do some troubleshooting in that area.

The source direct bypasses the tone stage (opamps etc...) so you will loose some gain, say 30% quieter as a ballpark however
it should still sound normal. Confirms problem in tone stage, need to check opamp +/-15Vdc supply, probably need to find better
test points.

Thanks Binkman.
Are you saying that I should make sure to select "none" for speakers that are not connected? Right now I am only using the Front speakers (not Surround or Center). Trying that, but the buzzying still comes, for example if I select something other than "Direct".

The unit has been sitting for a good 18 hrs, cooled down, and when I first switched it on, it wouldn't play the tape sound, even in "Direct". After being on for 5 or 10 mins, it kicked in and started playing music.
So, something thermal going on...
Direct and Stereo both go fine, other settings yield a loud hum/buzz and no music

Anyway, making progress here, thanks for all the support and ideas. It seems that the digital setting also have a pretty key role with this A/V units.

I gave the user manual a glance and yes select 'No' for other speakers not selected. With only 2 spk'rs you can listen to direct or stereo. other cinema modes etc. you need surround. A+B may do it. Why it hums on other settings if after selecting no.. I don't know why. perhaps other digital parameters need to be selected. I did read whatever the input source, e.g. tape.. you're only limited to that format.
here's the manual if you don't have it.

Thanks.

A did another test over night. Left the unit plugged in and in stand-by. For whatever reason, leaving it in this state (or leaving it powered down and unplugged) leads to all memory of settings being lost. So, when I powered the unit on this morning, the radio settings were lost and none of the options on speakers were remembered. Everything was default as though I did a system reset.

No.. it's a small cap that holds a charge to the memory. should hold mem. for a few weeks min. Try prog. in a fm station and retest it. maybe there's a save function in the manual.
