Onkyo Model 8 Speakers

I wanted to know any info on these speakers. I tried looking them up and nothing came about. I even went on a japanese site for onkyo which lists a majority of their whole speaker line but these just don't show up. Any help would be great especially the specs on these! Thanks!

Not familiar with them, so can only infer from these pics and those on the auction. Entry-level two way speaker, probably from the mid 1970s. Vinyl veneer but seems decently constructed. Woofer has cloth surrounds which means no deterioration like foam, although cloth can stiffen up over time. I wouldn't expect super low bass. Potential damage to the cabinet due to space heater behind.

Hundreds of different speaker models from different manufacturers were very similar to this. Unlikely to be anything special.

A friend of mine is sending me a set and I saw these on ebay since this listing was all I found that had anything to do with them. I heard good things about early Onkyo speakers and since I have a Onkyo TX-1500 I figured it would be a nice pairing.
 
While not generally known for their speakers today (most of the speakers they sell currently are part of 5.1 or 7.1 surround systems), in the past, Onkyo was a huge speaker manufacturer. Like many manufacturers, they had a range of models, from entry level to high end. The model 8 would have been the former. Here's an example of one of their high end models.

It just occurred to me to check the Audio Magazine archive. This was in the October 1975 issue (p 97).

WOW that grand scepter is nuts! Thanks for the info I appreciate it! I will see how they sound. I seem to be a bit picky and actually sold a pair of Klipsch R-41m bookshelf speakers over two Pinnacle AC 400 bookshelf speakers because they sounded much clear to me. Also my last question is were the drivers on these older speakers reliable or well made? Or did that also differ because of the range of models.
 
Speakers made from paper and cloth (as these are) are generally reliable, although almost any drivers can be blown if abused. As I mentioned above, cloth can stiffen, although that tends to be the exception rather than the rule. What these probably will need is replacement capacitors in the crossovers. If the highs seem lacking, check that the tweeters work (if you don't hear any sound from them, you can remove them from the cabinet and connect them directly to the wires coming from your receiver, as long as you keep the volume low and the time short). If they check out OK, then a recapping is probably in order.

Just got em in today and hooked em up. They sound great to me. The High Range knob on the back works as it should, turning off the tweeter and increasing it. Like you said I am sure it does need a recap. I am no audio expert so I am eventually going to take them in to have that done. I have them hooked up to my Onkyo TX-1500 receiver. Thanks again for all the info and help!
 
So I did some digging and found a review on these speakers. Very interesting and has more in depth look at them spec wise. For those in the future!

They look quality and many simple 2 ways like that sound very good. Recap it yourself, super easy and rewarding.
