Onkyo TX-2500 mk1

So I’ve come across this Onkyo TX-2500 mk1 which I’m thinking of buying. Seller sent me pics of its insides and I’d like some of you guys’ inputs. For me it seems fine at a first glance, but I’m far from an expert. He’s also sent me a video of it connected to a pair of speakers which I sadly can’t post, but it sounded great and the controls did what they were supposed to.

Why can't you post a video? Just copy and paste right here in the message box.

If everything works, go for it. Can't beat it.

It’s because it was sent through a messaging app, so it doesn’t have a link to post. Any suggestions? Sorry if the it’s a dumb question lmao

Hmm, I have always been able to do any or all video copying no matter what type of platform it comes from. Don't know if you have a laptop but you can always save it to your video files and then upload it here.

I think you would just right click it and then click copy and save.

Here it is before it gets copyright striked or something lmao

Looks like a good little unit, even if they sound good on one setting, I'd move the function selector and try the radio and others. A lot of play-back issues can happen with a dirty function selector and most are left on one setting for a long time.

It's cool seeing the insides but it's really hard to see if there's an internal issue, at least for me. If the unit is clean and the inside isn't full of dust, it will probably work for a long time but there's no guarantee.

Thanks for the reply! This will be my first amp purchase ever; I’m actually planning on buying two amps; A Marantz 1030 and either this Onkyo or a Kenwood KR-6200, both similarly priced. The Kenwood was recapped, therefore a safer purchase, but it doesn’t speak to me like this Onkyo does so I’m very conflicted

In my experience the equipment from pre-77 might need a service, I can't pull one off the racks without it needed something. After that they tend to work fine, except my beautiful Yamahas. I'm sure in another 10 years they will all need to be cracked opened and serviced.

It sounds like your getting stereoitis, even if you get one of these the hunt will be on for more. The problem with the Marantz is you'll want to get the matching tuner, then the TT, then a tape deck, it never ends......

Sadly you’re right about the stereoitis part and I haven’t even properly started yet. A matching tuner sounds really nice, but I might choose the slightly more financially-sensible thing to do and purchase somewhere along the line a handcrafted wooden case for the 1030 from Etsy to improve it in the aesthetic department and scratch the blue light itch by buying an amplituner like the 2230, instead.

My experience with stereoitis was a 15 year period that resulted in 4 systems simultaneously in a one bedroom apartment with a understanding wife. Now I'm down to two and pretty much cured! So it can be a relatively short, fun ride without taking over your entire life for the duration or chasing away loved ones. :)

You’re a very lucky man to have such a wife!

In the video, the action of the balance control seems off, like one channel isn’t workin? I doubt the seller made a video showing something not working, but recheck it when in front of it.

Thanks a lot for the heads up! Sadly he’s not in the same city as me

Rarely does a balance control go to no sound at both extremes. It seems like turning it all the way to the right the sound stopped?
Ask about it
