Found myself with a dinged-up (working) $25 Yamaha HTR-5063 contending for my home theater main receiver, which is currently occupied by an Onkyo TX-SR604.

I'm running a headscratcher of a 5.1 Frankentheater featuring Paradigm Mini Monitor v5 as my mains, a Klipsch Quintet II center channel, a modest Paradigm PDR 8 v3 sub, and a pair of Sony rear surrounds of the SS-MSP2 variety.

Needless to say, we're on a budget here and I'm the only resident who cares about home theater.

Off the cuff, which do you think is the better unit to drive everything?

Usually I'm listening to music (jazz, bluegrass, live jam bands, blues) or watching ballgames, and then there's the occasional film on Netflix/DVD/BLU. No gaming.

Conventional wisdom says set up 'em and listen myself, and I will ... In the meanwhile, any insight?

I've got a TX-SR603X, one down from yours, that I'm using in a 2-channel system (with a bigger Integra in the main HT). It's used for TV and music and seems perfectly satisfactory. I'm guessing you'll find the Yamaha not quite the equal of the Onkyo in music SQ, plus it has a better remote.

As always, just my opinion, YMMV.

Happy trails,
Larry B.

While I have never owned that particular Yamaha or Onkyo, all I can say is that I own a Yamaha RX-V757 surround receiver that I strictly use for 2.0 stereo listening and I have to say that I am very surprised with its performance. Ever since I put it into my system it hasn't come back out. In fact, it has just about ruled the roost over most of my vintage gear. I have never listened to any of the Onkyo surround receivers so I can't comment on them sound-wise, but I would mention that I have read a lot of people complain about the excessive heat they produce. I have also heard of a few more than normal failures as well (quite possibly due to the heat buildup). However, as far as actual sound goes, as you said, the only way to know which one is for you is to actually spend some time with the Yammy to see which one you like better. Only your ears can tell you that. ;)

For $25 the Yamaha makes a fine garage, bedroom, or PC system regardless of how it compares to the Onkyo for HT.
