Opinions on Infinity QLS speakers anyone?

Thank you! I think they sound great! Some may think the bass is too pronounced but I love it and other than that surprisingly very smooth, warm and refined. Which I have to say is not what I expected.

Speaking of bass, I have never seen a "black" Watkins woofer. Maybe just the lighting???

I spoke to him after he brought these home and he was just besides himself. One happy AK brother in Nebraska right now folks. I really hope that mine turn out to be as nice looking as yours CarnahanBB.
Plus it looks like they go with your furniture....... (can't believe I just said that)

You might want to read the manual regarding proper placement, which you can find from here:

They give tips on how to get the best sound you can from them.


I remember those speakers sounding refined when they came out. Infinity was not just making a full range speaker, but a very good sounding one. They were a lot of money when new, which is why people like me never considered buying them (it was not because of how they sounded!). Their size would also have caused me grief over the years, since I have moved many times since the 1970's, though I am sure I would have found a way to transport them if I had had them. When those first came out, they were the best Infinity speakers made. Of course, the next year they came out with something bigger and better, but when the QLS came out, they were a statement of what Infinity could do. And the best that Infinity could do in 1976 was very good indeed.

If you ever feel the need to upgrade now (which you likely won't), you will most likely be looking at very significant expense, unless you get very, very lucky.

Congrats on those, I think you will be pleased, I have a pair I restored Here with help from AK members in the Infinity Section. In fact Im getting ready to do a re-capp
on them now. I drive mine with a Pioneer Spec 2 with no problems. As for the Black woofers Iv'e seen a few pics of sets with the black woofers. Some QLS1s even had black Baffles/fronts on them.

Man I want a pair of those.....bad. I guess I'll have to "live with" my Quantum 3's for the time being....sigh.

I only have QLS-2s, but have seen and heard the 1s -- really nice sound! :music: :yes: I really like the look of them, too, with the black against the woodgrain. My wife thinks they are on the big side, but doesn't complain about the looks. That's already pretty good, for her! :D
 
seems to me like you would want to swap them from the way shown so the tweeter array is inside.
 
Well I go to look at these tomorrow and am really getting excited. I sold my RS 2.5's and really miss them so these should fit the bill nicely. The fun part should be trying to fit them in the SUV. Will have to get out the tape measure tonight.
Thanks for all the info and for what to look for when I get there. I have said this before but will say it again. AK is a great site with some really nice people.
 
I got mine in the back of a Saturn Vue, so unless your SUV is really small you should be okay. These are 66"x18"x15".
 
my old rebuilt QLS1's are the singularly most impressive speaker i have ever heard. i will just leave it at that. i was hoping that Carnaha would end up passing on these...
 
Yup. Went and picked them up yesterday. Had to drive 3hrs one way but boy are these things something. Think I have a bad Watkins though and will have to swap them out tomorrow and see if it's the woof or the Xover.
I am amazed at the natural sound that comes from these. Wide soundstage and good mids and highs. I love the Watkins woofers and the one seems very smooth and natural like I know they can sound. From what I can hear so far, I think that these speakers will need to be 'dialed in' to the room and environment which should be a fun journey that I look forward to.
I will deox and lube the pots when I swap out the woofers and that's always a good thing.
Thanks for all the feedback you guys. You helped me decide and I'm glad I chose to go get them. Definitely worth the drive.
I really look forward to hearing them when they are 100%.
Oh and let me say that these things are BIG !!!

When you pop out your woofers, try to get some pics of the backside of them, and pics of the lower crossover sections. There have been several variations of each and it will be helpful to know how yours are put together.
My pair had completely different capacitor sets for the watkins, but with cdfac's help I got them set up identically. That and the re-cap of the mid-bass, MF and HF sections really helped the focus and imaging.

Frankly, I didn't realize that there is a difference. I thought if a speaker had two pairs of binding posts that meant you could use an amp for each individual pair of binding posts but I guess that is not the case. Doesn't make any sense to me!
