Oppo BDP-95 for SACD??

I'm looking hard at replacing my base-level BluRay player with an Oppo BDP-95, not least because it seems to be very well regarded for its audio quality. The Oppo would also serve as my gateway to SACD audio, which I'm very interested in now that I am completely out of LP space.

Anyone here have an opinion on the BDP-95 as an SACD player, or any other input on this device?

ON EDIT: There's also the Cambridge Audio Azur 752BD, I guess?

If you can spend a little more, I highly recommend the Oppo BDP-105. I've owned both the 95 and 105. They sound the same to me, but the 105 has digital inputs, so you can use it's DAC's for other sources.

If you like SACD, you can now download DSD files. With the 105, you can play those files from your network or attached storage device!
 
I second a recommendation for something with DAC access. SACD is a great sounding format but its also a format that isn't exactly brimming with titles, especially current titles. High res PCM downloads, and DSD streaming/downloads, seem to be the future. I have one of the finest SACD players around and its such a PITA to track down titles for it that I just gave up and went with a high-res capable server and DAC.

Note that I hate mail-ordering physical-media. I either want to find things at random in a store or download a file. So what irritates me might not irritate you.

Thanks folks! One reason I was favoring the 95 is that the 105 seems to be regarded as a bit more bright or brittle in its audio than the 95. But flexibility is always a plus....
 
Ive heard it frequently at a friends and can say that it is an excellent SACD and CD player. It slaughters my Sony Player. Even the Pandora on it sounds good. I might be wrong but I believe you can use the USB on it to play any downloaded music through its DAC

Do you have any links to reviews for this? I've been thinking about picking up an Oppo or maybe a Marantz.
 
No links, sorry: I was just surfing around. RussK1: can I assume your 'it' is the BDP-95?

After reading all this and searching online I'm thinking this:
  • BPD-95 on a 'budget'
  • Cambridge Audio Azur 752BD over the BDP-105 for sound.
 
Yes, sorry the Oppo 95. I've also heard really good things about the Nu force but its based on the 93
 
Get the 105 ($999 from Oppo directly; refurbished).

The 105 sounds better than the 95; from its analog* out connection.
- The 95 is slightly less smooth sounding than the 105.

Unless he has a setup like mine and needs the analog outs. But I'd just get whatever you can find a better deal on, as I'd bet money youll never here a difference between the two unless you have a super revealing system with an ideal setup in an ideal room, and preferably one from a shop near you so you have some local support. Though the refurb 105 sounds like the way I'm gonna go as there is nothing near me that sells either.
 
Still enjoy my Oppo BDP-95. Still enjoy SA/HD/redbookCDs. It's too bad the SACD format never really took off. It's impossible to compete with point and click downloading/streaming convenience.
 
I have a BDP-95 and it sounds very good indeed. I've also seen people selling them pretty cheaply used to buy 105's so they can be a bargain right now on the used market. The 95 sounds right at home in my very high end modern "big rig".

I also have a Cambridge Azur in the basement and the Oppo sounds better for sure to me.
 
The 95, you can find sometimes for $650, and $799 directly from Oppo (refurb).

The 105, which in my humble opinion is a better deal (value) and a better BD/DVD (audio/video) player, with a much improved (faster) video processor, CD/SACD/HDCD player, DAC, preamp, headphone amp, etc., etc., etc.; you can get directly from Oppo (refurb) for $999.

But that's just my own opinion. ...And I feel that my opinion is rock solid.
 
Against all previous advice…*Why not just get a 93? The analog is nice, but one can also do better than the DAC in the Oppo. I have my Oppo outputting digital from SACD, DVD-A, and Blu Ray to my W4S DAC-2. I do it via a Monoprice HDMI Switch that has Coax and Toslink outputs. I think it's a tad better than the Oppo 95. Given the way the DACs are put together in the 105, I think that the 95 is likely to beat it so this would beat the 105 as well. Now I'm not a compliant W4S DAC-2 enthusiast either. My hunch is that Sabre is oversold. It's a bit clinical, a bit sharp, and a bit lacking in bass for me and both Oppo and DAC-2 are Sabre-driven. Still, the DAC-2 beats the Oppo with its better output stages.
 
Then go with the 103. ...Again, a better overall player than the 93, and you can get the 103 for the same price as the 93. ...No two ways thinking about it!

* Funny what some people can say about the Sabre DACs. ...The proof is in the listening, and out of 1,000 people, compute how many prefer the 105, or the 95, or the 103, or the 93, or the 83.

Then again, if all you're looking for is SACD playback, the Oppo DV980H is a giant killer. SACD was the target on the design - video playback mostly an afterthought. They even got a button on the remote to turn all video features off.

I like mine ... you can score one for a couple hundred if you dig around ...
