optimus Pro LX5II dipole lineaum

I spotted a pair, seemed to be in fine shape. Couldnt hear them out. And they have the dipole tweeters.


Any experience with these little buggers, And how are they in regards to sound. Will they surround me in aural Bliss? Its not an arm and a leg for the pair. But thats not why im asking. Are they worth it for the sound they emit?:music:

I particularily like Emit tweeters. Very little to none in regards to sibilance.

They were reviewed by stereophile if you can get them cheap enough go for it after all its a hobby isnt it?
 
There's a Seas driver that is supposed to be an upgrade for those- and the Linaeum tweeter sounds pretty nice. I've used them for rear surrounds with good results.
 
Larry Van Wormer (former Bass List member) came up with a crossover mod for these that's supposed to be very good. He told me that the driver "upgrade" mentioned above isn't all that necessary if you mod the stock woofers along with the crossover mod. Dennis Murphy also took a look at Larry's crossover and found it to be just about perfect, although he added a 30 (or 33?) ohm resistor to Larry's version.

some good info here. Many thanks, they are about 40 dollars for the pair. Not asking their value, just stating how much they cost. Hope thats not a violation of AK rules. Is it ok if i ask , that for the price are they ok?

Using them as rear surrounds sounds appealing. Gives that extra spacious sound.

so i went to the pawning place.
Got out my battery and a short piece of wire...son! can you hear the tweeter tweeting?...yes dad he replies...
connect the other speaker...son i ask again...can you hear this one...yes dad i can hear it...are you sure? they cost 40 dollars!
yes dad i can hear it.
Then an aquaintance walks by...hey i trust your ears, lets see if you can hear the tweets...to make it short, he can hear them.
Got them with a eosone set of sub sat. RSp 910 sub with matching sats. asked if i could buy them with 20 bucks off sure enough the lady said yes.:D
 
Sounds like a fair price if they are in good shape. They listed for $150 each when new but were routinely on sale for $75.
 
Currently i put them in, on top of the paradigm 5se speaks. And i must say they are a few decibals lower than the Monitor 9 v3s up front. Adjustable levels are wonderful for this(HT reciever).

Over time, ill certainly experiment with different setups/other recievers and such. But for now they are performing surround duty.
They are in very good shape. Didnt feel teh desire to wipe them down or clean them...different story with the sub/sat. They need a wipe down.
 
I have owned a pair for many years, I used to work for the Shack. I had the crossover mod done and they sound quite good for what they are. I pair them with a powered Shack sub and drive them with a Nakamichi TA-3A for my bedroom system.
 
what are the differences between the Pro lx5 and the pro LX5 II. I hope its not a degrade in quality in the II version.

there seems to be no way i can get the woofer out. but the cross over does have screws and is rather wide.
 
The LX-5 Pro speakers work well as surrounds in my system, I have them hanging upside down to maximize the effect of the dipolar Linaeums.

I'm not totally certain but you may have to go through the back panel to gain access to the woofer mounting screws, I believe the screws are attached from the inside.

I think the II had a different woofer, plastic cone, possibly a tad bigger than the original LX5.

I owned a pair; I think they were the II's... Knowing what I do now about updating and improving speakers, I wish I could take them back.

They were a frustrating speaker. The tweeter is quite wonderful. The problems were all in the woofer, or possibly the crossover. The bass isn't what it could be, but the primary problem is in the midrange, which is both colored and somewhat smeared or ill-defined.
 
the II i have do have the plastic woofer. And the cross over cutout is smaller than the woofer so no way to get it out that way.

But it does appear to have a ring around the woofer that with some nudging can come off, but may be prone to getting cracked, not sure.

If i have the inkling to put it on my bedroom rig ill do it tonite and get a feel for it in stereo.

I believe that if you read the thread that I linked to earlier, you'd find that the whole front baffle is removed to gain access to the woofer mounting screws.

By first removing the little plastic/rubber grommets on the front baffle, that are used for mounting the grill assembly, you'll find the baffle mounting screws underneath. Once these are removed, the whole front baffle lifts out giving you access to everything.

thanks terryo, I will read further. Was busy with a movie yesterday. Checking out the output on my eosone sub. decent but not great. Might be better for music.

They were indeed reviewed, but not that favourably, although the tweeters seemed well regarded by the reviewer. I have a pair serving duty as computer speakers. They have a nice, airy quality to the highs which is very pleasing. Formerly they were my rear surround speakers in a h/t system, a job for which they were ideally suited.
