Ordered 1.7i Maggie's today. (Edit) Would like sub ideas please.

They tend to have low WAF and are not well-suited for use in "shared spaces", like the average living-room or family rec-room. I know lots of folks who would love to own them, but don't have the proper space to effectively utilize them. :(
Actually wifey likes the 1+1s in the family room. They must live, however, about three feet from front wall. She "dresses up" the subs with flowers.

SWMBO asks me one thing, everytime I say i'm looking to buy something." Where is it going to go?" It's going in the basement, so I get a pass.
I can move things around. Ideally they will sound good somewhere close to wher current speakers are.
When I remodeled basement after backup in '17, I strung 50' of #12 wire inwall perimeter of front wall from gear on right to left speakers. Not ideal, but not a traffic trip hazzard from stairway behind to barn doors on left.
Currently 30" from front walls to speakers. Could come out to 4' without major issue. More and I just walk around them.
Opposite short wall has intruding bar in partial way.
Another TV room in basement is 14 square x 7' high and two openings. Bad multiple standing waves?

Local used 1.7i set I was negotiating on couple days, sold. Wasn't sellers fault. That pair not ment to be. Will wait for local used or consider new.
Thanks for all your advice.

edit: Think I'll get a showroom demo soon. New ones aren't going to have delaminating issues.

I got a demo of Maggie 1.7i at an audio shop today.
The demo was in guessing about 14' sq room with 10" ceiling. Only room treatment was two 1" thick pads at side walls and carpet floor. CDs played through Anthem pre into a 200 wpc Mac 7 channel amp. Only mains used. No sub woofers in use. Sounded very nice. Accoustic Bass on Diana Krall album was definitely there.
They recommended one or two Golden Ear model Supersub X @ $1250 each if deeper bass desired. They have two opposed 8" drivers, two radiators and 1400 watt amp. Weight 40 #s. That's the only brand of smaller subs they offer.

Magnepan site says thier optional bass panels for $800 ea can be wired in parallel with 1.7i. (They don't give lower bass just MORE of what 1.7i gives.) But that is about a 2 ohm load! Too low for safety of my Rogue amps. I'd need a separate power amp for them.

I ordered a pair of 1.7i without any subs for now. Expect delivery in about 4 weeks.

I will be looking for your experiences of subs used with 1.7i or other Maggies.

Thanks for all your help

New 1.7i's just setup. Initially have 3' from front wall. I'm playing some classic Verve Jazz Masters CD recording. Out of box they DO HAVE some bass.
I will break them in before deciding on subwoofers or not.
They are less warm compared to my ADS L880 or Ohm C2's. More transparent, if right term. IMO, don't think they will as easily gloss over a poor recording. My first impression with one CD only.

Most excellent choice! I love my 1.6QR, and they do mighty well matched to an M&K sealed 10" subwoofer.

I also use my 2.5R with a JL audio fathom subwoofer and an M&K push/pull dual 12" sub.

Love my maggies, only my best infinitys (with EMIM and EMITS) come close to the sound of my Magnepans, but my maggies win out on everything but the 'impact' or 'slam' of some music.

All my subs are sealed, but I've heard ported subs that were 'fast' enough to match them.

Dealer bought Maggies from, offers Golden Ear Extreme X subwoofer. He says they integrate well with Maggies, his opinion. They have 1400 watt class D amp, opposed two 8" woofers and two passive radiators in about 14" cube, for $1250. One option.
Not sure I have to have a sub. Pretty good bass on own. Will give few months break in.

I'm liking your setup! Congrats on your 1.7s!
First time I heard my SMG after restoring them, I was frankly floored by them. I just sat there in amazement at how transparent and dimensional the sound was. My plan was to sell them after the resto was completed, but after the first test listen, that thought flew out the window!
I run a Def Tech Supercube II with them, and I love this sub. The additional sound depth was surprising. I find the one sub is more than enough with the SMG's.
Cheers, Glenn

I have a definitive supercube 3, which uses two active 5.5" subwoofers, and a 5.5" Passive, and it mates very well with my infinity renassaince 90, so likely would match well my maggies, although I"ve not used it with them, so likely the golden ears will do well, they've got a good reputation, and IIRC the company is founded by the founder of definitive. However, I've not heard them.

(edit to add) I typed all this before reading glens (GD70) post, that's funny right there!

These Maggies, make me smile. I spend most my AK time on the Jazz Thread. Can't help myself, double posting about them.
I don't think any speaker can sound live. "Anyone" can tell a live sax from recording. But these emerse you in the music. They are not warm as my Ohm C2 and ADS l880. In my room, they sound big, and can play loud. A bad recording might be ear taxing.
Transparent they are. Piano and vocals are outstanding, IMO.

I has 1.6's in an L shaped room in the long area, about 12' X 25 and drove them with a Rotel RB-991 (200 wpc @ 8 ohms) and used sealed/passive radiator Velodyne VA 1210 sub (10" active,12" passive) and the sound was superb. I had then about 3' from the back wall and 3' from the side wall. The subs were set so they only took over where the Maggies started to fall off. It took some time to find the balance but it paid off in the long run.

Congratulations and welcome the flat panel family Old Guy. :bigok:

Thank you.
I've played some CDs and vinyl through them. They even do well at low volume, when don't want to bother others. Spectacular.

My pleasure,
I've been enjoying my Riverside, Verve and Blue Note recordings on my 1.6s as of late. I too listen at lower levels when then the house is quiet at night and yes you are correct they do well at lower levels. I've got my second Carver Knight Shadow sub up and running with the Maggies now so its been difficult getting anything done around here if you know what I mean. :naughty:

Very nice! I’m running a pair of 3.3Rs. I rebuilt the panels (removed all adhesive and applied new) and replaced all of the electrolytics with high quality Mundorfs. They’re basically the same as the 3.6r with from what I’ve read a small change to the mid. They sound incredible and pair very well with a Velodyne F-1200-b. Since it’s servo controlled the bass is just as accurate and tactile as the Maggie panels.

With that said I’d suggest something servo controlled. I’d want the most accurate bass I could get. I’ve heard some offerings for Rythmik Audio. For accuracy it doesn’t get much better. Also they’re prices are much better than buying something like the Velodyne DD series.

After just a few days use, my impressions:
I listen to mostly jazz. Thier forte, is piano, vocals and accoustic instruments. Small group jazz on them is very nice.
They are transparent. That means you hear a lot of detail. On a down side, that transparency does not sweeten poor or harsh recordings. These are not as warm as my ADS L880, Ohm C2, Canton Karat 200 or BA A100 speakers.
This is all, in my opinion.

I made a mistake when ordering these. At the dealer, his sample was white cloth with silver aluminum edging, covering the entire 2" speaker edge. I ordered a standard version with black on black, as they call it. I ignorantly thought I was to receive that same edging in black color. Not what I got. Edges are cloth wrapped with just a black oak 5/8" wide trim only. When speaker is lifted, your gripping on the cloth only. Have to be carefull not to put fingers through cloth on faces. This is what edge looks like.
I should have quized the dealer or he should have offered discussion of all options.

Congrats!

Note that you can attenuate the top a bit via resistors on the back panel. Some folks over at MUG seem to prefer that approach.

You may eventually look into getting subs. I find it difficult to eliminate localization when using one unless you cross very low (40-50 hz) with a steep slope. The trick is to not set the level too high. I experimented greatly with different settings in the HT with Acoustat 1+1s. In the end, 50 hz provided the most linear measured results.

Given I have a bright room. I started with included 1 ohm tweeter resisters.
I may get a set of Mye stands, before persueing subs.
