Original Dark Shadows - 1966 - 1971

The original network show lasted nearly five years: June 27, 1966, to April 2, 1971, with 1225 episodes and six seasons.

I vaguely recall portions of the show as a young girl, and Dark Shadows sparked my first love for Vampires. If anybody should contribute to this post, it doesn’t have to stick with the theme of only Dark Shadows. It can be about different shows/films/anything you like or compare/contrast vampire related.

I’m looking for the original Dark Shadows series to collect every single episode, but they certainly cost a small fortune. Anyway, just thought I would see if there are any other fans out there?

Almost forgot! If anyone is able to get Decades TV channel, original Dark Shadows airs one episode each weeknight at midnight.

The program had its moments, and its content was very unusal as American television's so-called soap operas went. The Collins Clan... Boo! Jonathan Frid: wasn't that name of the actor who played the lead character, (very) ol' Whatizname Collins, The Vampire?

note: I always wanna call him "Barabbas", but then I recall that Jesus had nuthin' t'do with the program DS.

^^^ And the character "Quentin Collins"... that was ... David Selby, IIRC? He became a minor "tabloid for teen girls" heart throb, mags like Tiger Beat, etc., picked up on him. Guess it was the luxurious mane...

Fun TV when I was in 5th grade and later. Nothing really happened for about 3 months until Willy Loomis found Barnabus' casket and released him only to be bitten and under the control of Barnabus. Adam was the Frankenstein copy. Selby was the werewolf copy. Angelic was the witch and later vampire herself (Great eyes!) and an interesting note that Dick Smith an innovative make-up artist did the mak-up for Frid when an experiment Dr. Hoffman tried backfired, making Barnabus 200 years old. Dark Shadows was recorded live so it ALL had to work. Smith's make-up type became standard by the mid 1970's.

Have fond if vague memories of seeing a few of those shows. It came on either before or after one of Mom's soaps. Viewed today, I found them slow and not too dramatic but it was spooky back then.

Now as for the recent Dark Shadows movie.... so much expectation, not met.

I have the original soundtrack on vinyl recently found at a thrift store for $.59! I was happy as could be :-)

Mystic- good question! I’m not really sure about the teen heartthrob, although I do recall tiger beat (Scott Baio, David Cassidy!)...

FONSguy- you’re an expert on Dark Shadows! I have not seen very many episodes, but I am now so hooked since discovering them late at night on Decades. I think the show was really ahead of its time, and yes, wow—live performances! The special effects are pretty good to me even now.

CT_Ohio- I must be one of the rare ones who really got a kick out of the modern twist on dark shadows!

NAD80- It’s still kind of spooky LOL.

Thank you all so much for your contributions!

I hope everyone has a great weekend

Parman,

I think you’re right! I believe I read hundreds of episodes before Barnabas entered the show, and I guess it was due to network ratings slipping they had to step things up.

Well, it was that, else bring in Erica Kane and/or Luke & Laura.

They got some great actors on DS.. Joan Bennett, Thayer David(Count Petofi the one handed magician), Laura Parker, Jerry Lacy (Bogart look alike), Humbert Allen Astredo (Nickolas the warlock), Kate Jackson.

A friend's younger sisters used to watch the original show every day, get all creeped out, and refuse to be in the house alone for hours afterwards. We, of course, tortured them with noises in the basement, fake vampire bite marks on our necks, etc.

I watched it when it was new and I was young. I remember enjoying it, but would not want to watch it now as I am sure that would destroy the memories.
