I’m wondering about the styli options for an Audio Technica AT12Sa cartridge.

Most places I’ve looked, people say the the AT13, 14 or 15 won’t fit, but then I saw someone saying that one of the 14 versions actually does fit. So can anyone with actual experience verify one or the other?

I had the original shibata stylus for the AT12Sa, and while it tracked eminently, I personally prefer a bit more body to the sound (especially with my Luxman R-1040 receiver, and I just came from a Shure M75, which of course didn’t track like a star, but had a very pleasant warmth). I sold the shibata and now only a have an extremely cheap generic spherical or conical. Is there a stylus for the 12Sa that comes at least somewhere close to the refinement of the shibata, but has a little more body and/or bass?

Someone somewhere said he preferred the ATN12XE to the Sa, but I would love to hear some more opinions on that or other options. Or if one the 13/14/15 actually fits, would any one of then suit me better?

I should add that I’m on a Luxman PD 282, medium mass arm (14g, I think).

Like I said above, I’m using the Tonar hyper-elliptical from Da Capo Audio at the moment. Tracking at 1.7g as suggested by Manfred and sounding great.

Another question Manfred if you don’t mind… the recommended vtf for the original VM3-5D stylus (white/ivory colour with gold-ish AT logo) seems to be 1-2g. Is that correct? Seems a little low for a conical. I would have guessed 2-3g.

You must be confusing something there, 'cause the colour of the plastic holder of the VM3-5D is yellow. But, yes, 1 to 2 g (1.5 g suggested) should be correct for the VM3-5D, although I'm also aware of a slightly different, probably older spec (1 to 2.5 g (1.8 g suggested)).

Anyway, have a pic or two of your white needle, maybe? Because if that doesn't sport a tapered cantilever, but a totally straight one with open front (and the stone inserted not perpendicular), it might be one of the pretty rare VM3-6Ws.

Yup, that should be a VM3-6W. Probably an earlier exemplar - a later one would have a black "audio-technica" imprint plus black AT logo above instead.

Thanks Manfred. When I bought it, it was described as a 5D. It sounds very good actually but now I also need to find a 0.5mil to try
