Over used and incorrectly used phrases...

similost

Rockin and Rollin....
I see a list of them around here.. More over used, than incorrect, but some are still used not correctly..

I have one at the very top of my list...I'll list is and why... You do he same with the phrase or word that most eats on you..

For me... Critical Listening... I don't know, but it just seems to get over used... and at times, I think wrongly...

Critical of what? How the system sounds? Seems once you critique it, it's done... how do you keep critical listening for days on end?

Or are you taking notice of the music, and picking out instruments, or tones or something, that actually is not being critical, but rather focused listening?

There's a phrase we never hear.. Focused Listening... but we hear critical all the time...

So that's mine... What's yours?

Fast bass: There is no such thing. All low frequency content is inherently slow.

Stereo bass: There is no such thing. Somewhere around 80 Hz and below, low frequency content becomes non directional as the wavelengths are too long.

Liquidy mids: An audiophile term used mostly in glossy magazines by reviewers of high end equipment.

I listen to the music, not the gear.

Acoustic treatments wouldn't do me any good since Im getting diffusion from books/records on the shelf and absorption from curtains and furniture.

Good point. I love the gear and everything about it. For me it's integral to the music. There is no dividing line.

Oh, 'tubelike', or 'tubey'. I'm about to gag. Why not just say 'lacking'... yea, I love that rolled off 'lacking' sound. Yea, I love it when an amp is lacking in extension and frequency response, oh yea!

Unless that critical listening session is to listen to feedback hum coming from the speakers and mechanical hum from the transformer plates slapping against each other.

"My wife, who is certainly no audiophile, didn't know what I changed but immediately noticed a difference and said: Wow dear, that sounds nice! So if she can hear the difference, it's definitively there!"

Pisses me off so much. :D I mean, she ain't dumb. She knows you are fiddling with some new gear, she knows you bought something, she knows you want to hear that it sounds great or she has to "listen critically", to boring music, for two hours while you blab away about veils...

She knew before you knew you where going to buy "it".

:) I know its not a phrase per se, but it needed to be addressed.

Not audio related, but here are a few of my pet peeves:

"Co-conspirator" - Since a conspiracy involves more than one person, why the prefix "co"?

"Irregardless" - Not regardless?

Often - when pronounced off-TEN!

Audio related:

"Involving" - as it pertains to equipment. ugh.

^^^

"Irregardless" always cracks me up.

Ok, since non-audio verbiage has come up I gotta get this one off my chest..."melty"....as in "melty cheese". WTF? Why doesn't "melted" work any more?

The infamous "vinyls".

Not stereo related- I see "ect." so many times, I actually researched it to make sure that "etc." was still correct. It is the abbreviation of the Latin et cetera, it's not ec tetera.

"I could care less"

It's "I couldn't care less". If you could care less, this means that you must care about it even a little bit.

Lee.

"If it sounds good, it is good"

I see this as a sort misinterpretation of Daniel R. von Recklinghausen's statement
"If it measures good and sounds bad, -- it is bad. If it sounds good and measures bad, -- you've measured the wrong thing."

It's entirely possible that it sounds good to you, but is a complete failure in the task of High Fidelity reproduction. IOW, it may sound good to you, but be crap.
