Over used and incorrectly used phrases...

That's how the TV ads in the 70s pronounced it....

"Technics... by Panasonic"

Yes, I remember that - they should've known better.

If Panasonic wanted it pronounced "techniques" it should have been spelled that way.

Yeah, but that's the way it was always pronounced in Technic's heyday, never "teck-nicks". Perhaps it was just a Japanese thing.

Other curiosities of Japanese brands:

We call it Soh-nee, they call it SAH-nee. (From the Latin sonus)

Matsushita: Mah-SHOOs-ta.

Onkyo: We say "ONK-yo", they say "On-kyo".

And, I've always understand "Doo-all" to be the way Germans pronounced Dual. I welcome correction.

Happy trails,
Larry B.

I'd rather this 'then' that,

the word is THAN, notice the A.

Unless you're having both, one right after the other........

It doesn't really bug me but apparently we should say 'sensitivity' when we typically talk about 'efficiency' of speakers.

I see a list of them around here.. More over used, than incorrect, but some are still used not correctly..

I have one at the very top of my list...I'll list is and why... You do he same with the phrase or word that most eats on you..

For me... Critical Listening... I don't know, but it just seems to get over used... and at times, I think wrongly...

Critical of what? How the system sounds? Seems once you critique it, it's done... how do you keep critical listening for days on end?

Or are you taking notice of the music, and picking out instruments, or tones or something, that actually is not being critical, but rather focused listening?

There's a phrase we never hear.. Focused Listening... but we hear critical all the time...

So that's mine... What's yours?

That is mine as well - It sounds painful - start the song over- I wasn't completely critically listening - my mind was someplace else - damn it!

That one always bugs me. Now 'critically enjoying' with some Scotch - now that is OK!

This sounds better than it has any right to. What? Assigning a human quality to devices? I hate that phrase.

This system has a fluid, melty, minty, liquid midrange in spades. :D

BTW, Matsushita is mat-tsu-she-ta. I heard it directly from a Japanese guy once where I worked.

Saying Ohm it out, amp it out and volt it out instead of saying measure the resistance, current and voltage.

The use of impedance and resistance interchangeably, when talking about the opposition to the flow of electricity and the incorrect use of phase when speaking of the polarity of a signal.

Adding the letter S to words when it is not needed, such as, you have nice equipments.

I also hate people indiscriminately using abbreviations as if everybody will know what they mean.

Such as "SBIR" in the other thread about bass reproduction.
