Panasonic SV-3800 DAT - Can it play/record onto 120m/125m tapes?

Hey guys,

I am thinking about buying the mentioned Panansonic Dat machine since they are so incredibly cheap. I actually don't want to use it for listening to music (I have my Record player and Sony 909/Aiwa 7000 cassette decks for that) but instead would like to record my big collection of audiobooks and plays onto it.

For that case obviously using the "biggest" tapes, so that I can get like 5h with longplay on one tape is pretty much what I'd like to have.

Does someone know if the Panasonic can make use of those tapes? If not, what is the biggest tape I could use? Also, if the Panasonic isn't compatible, does someone know a player that actually can handle the long tapes that are usually meant for streamers and doesn't cost an arm and a leg considering that I don't need the highest audio quality for audiobooks?

I think you are better off recording them on a computer and converting to mp3. You can buy a stand alone audio recorder like a TASCAM DR-05 or DR-07 which can record directly to mp3, or get an analog to digital interface like an Alesis io2. Any of these would be less than $100.

Agreed, DAT is kind of pointless these days. Recording to a digital file will give you the same result without any moving parts or having to track down tapes.

Not recommended you use 120m or 125 m tapes, and not recommended you use 90m tapes either. Doing so, is not recommended due to the tension system on this machine not being suited for these DDS longer tapes. Using 60m (2 hours audio) is fine. Parts for your DAT machine are difficult to source today. Care is advised.
