Pat Metheny Imaginary Day

Imaginary Day a very good album. I remember some years ago when I tried to record this CD on tape, some distortion was generated (in the peaks). It seems that this album has some extra dynamic range.

Bright Size Live is also one of my favourites, there the bass is played by Jaco Pastorius, excellent work.

Secret Story, Offramp and Quartet are beautiful too.
Pat Metheny has also some other albums with John Scofield and Gary Burton.

Big fan here of all his stuff. Letter From Home gets played regularly at my house. I got to hear him last year or 07 at the verizon wireless theater in downtown houston.

I wasn't as keen on Secret Story. But I like most of We Live Here - 'cept for the title track

Listening for first time in long time. Somebody lent me the "Disk 2". Was that a special edition or iTunes download? I think the #2 was convereted from a download but I have original CD and so ripped that disk lossless.

Listening in new light it is nice. Something how when you're expecting something like First Circle and at first it's different you may not like it till you have some time to erase that thought and listen anew.

I have Pat Metheny's album Still Life Talking (1987) which is a snoozer. Pretty lousy imo. Are there better?

What don't you like about it? If we knew, it would be easier to make a recommendation. Bright Size Life is a good one- one of his earliest.

Disc #2 would be from last years "re-issue" all those are out-takes or songs that did not fit on the original cd , the cool thing about that album is it's Pat solo & it's a story about a woman who pat dated for many years & the album starts with the relationship being good & slowly turning into a nightmare until they broke up , what i found really cool is once you get into it , the album really does kinda tell a story with the moods even without any words , it's a pretty deep album & toward the end it get's pretty dark & kinda "desperate" I have been luck enough to talk to Pat a few times about this album & it really was a project close to his heart , there is also a live dvd from the tour that was released in japan , he was never happy with the performance so never put it out here , I know he was kinda sorry he did a "video" for the album , he felt pretty cheesy the way it came out

That's way cool you know Pat that well. He's amazing. His music has had a huge impact on my life. Got into him when Letter From Home came out at was on air a lot in NYC area on CD 101.9. Saw him that year for first time at the Beacon Theater in NY. My wife and I were blown away and I started picking up earlier stuff.

My favorites are still his Brazilian period but I'm now getting into the newer stuff.

If you ever talk to him again please let him know how much his music means - I guess I can only say to me. His music has helped me through some very haard times. If I could only have one album on the proverbial deserted island it would be one of Pat's.

I have almost everything PM has done and I am not a huge fan of his recent releases. Imaginary Day didn't click with me, however I did listen to it just the other day and it wasn't as bad as I remembered, perhaps it is a sleeper for me and will come into its own one day.

Yeh , i live just about an hour outside of boston & he had spent a lot of time out here through the 90's & early 2000's , i have not seen him in a few years , but have been lucky ebough to hang with him quite a few times & have some great conversations with him , I was lucky to see him play a small club in boston 2 nights in a row he was out playing guitar with Roy haynes & the 1st night we hung out quite a bit 2nd night i went to another show & the way the stage was set-up it's only maybe 2 feet off the ground , no sides on the stage & pat let me sit right next to his amp the whole night pretty amazing being right next to his amp & seeing him play right next to me .
He is a such a humble & nice person , funny you mention how much his music has helped have such an imapct on your life , i am the same way & have told pat that many times & he almost gives you a look like he does'nt understand , but at the same time is so happy someone "get's it" & it really has affected someone so much , i think he likes that more that the "tech questions" I have been around when a lot of people have weird "hey when you play the 7th chord in bar 5 how do you get your fingers around the neck like that"
A good friend of mine is a professor at Berklee college of music & once a year Pat will go there for a week & teach the students , My friend get's to have Lunch with Pat whe he does this which is really cool , I guess they have a "pat metheny ensemble" at the school where the students disect his work & learn how to play it , then he comes in & teaches & plays with the students , then the end of the week they have a night concert where pat does a concert with all these student splaying his music & backing him up .
the Concerts are only for students , but my friend got me into one of the classes & then into the actual concert to see it as he knows i'm a huge fan , it was really cool to see slightly different interpretations of his work done by himself & students .
Hopefully we get a new PMG album this year , it's been a while now i was starting to wonder if they were done as pat had som many other tours & projects , but i guess they toured japan this past week so hoping this get's them back to the studio !

My favorite is a toss up between First Circle and Still Life. Lately Imaingary Day gets most play.

I was just surfing some reviews. This one says engineering of CD had problem I have read that the DVD Audio version is best. Check this out:

Sonically, the CD unfortunately has a problem. The recording and mix by Rob Eaton are excellent, capturing the subtleties of the almost dizzying number of instruments and added sounds going on. But the sound was ruined in the CD mastering process where mastering engineer Ted Jenson added an absolutely inexcusable amount of sonic compression, almost completely killing the dynamic range of this music that uses dynamics so effectively. Looking for a reason why this CD sounded so sonically squashed, I found, upon examining its digital audio levels, that for many of the tracks, including those with a musical ebb and flow, the sound level spent close to 90% of its time confined within the top 3 db available on a CD, out of an available dynamic range of over 90 CD. So the CD becomes a big disappointment on a good stereo system. The lousy mastering job also makes the recording sound cold and a bit shrill. This CD should definitely be recalled for remastering -- it won't be the first time this kind of thing has happened.

PMGs last cd the way up sounds incredible sterile.....so damn pity...It suffers from the same technical mastering as ID?

BTW....ID is my favorite album.....it has no weak moments...and i have a symfonic rock background.

I really like Still Life Talking. But I still think his best is the first self-titled PMG album:

San Lorenzo and Phase Dance are clear standouts in his entire catalog, imo. :thmbsp:

As Falls Wichita and American Garage are also among my favorites - I think I like his earlier stuff better overall. To this day, "It's for You" on AFWSFWF remains one of the most beautiful songs I think I've ever heard. The long guitar solo part at the end is around the closest thing I've ever heard to pure joy in music.

I never got into Offramp much for some reason. It seemed to idiosyncratic or something. Just didn't dig it as much as Wichita, PMG, and Garage.

I like most of the live albums I've heard: Travels, Question and Answer, Flower Hour, Road to You, Trio Live. He always seems to take it to another level live - an incredible performer, so talented. I saw him once a long time ago in a theater, and in a small club in upstate NY a few years ago with his trio - just incredible, a really great musician.

Yeh , the Early albums are definate classics , really some amazing tunes on them , I love the 1st as well as Bright size life & i really liked Offramp , there is some weird stuff on that album , but there are plenty of classics , cool album to turn out the lights & just give a spin .

I picked up near mint copies of First Circle and As Falls Wichita at the record store today, nearly done with FC right now. Fantastic recording, IMO. But WTF, it takes balls to have that tune as the first cut.
