Perpetuum Ebner 2040 full size

I didn't think they were so bad -- they have a different mechanism than Duals etc, so it requires a different approach, and if you are used to other changers, it can be counterintuitive, but in and of themselves, not so bad.
There are service manuals for some PEs at Vinyl Engine, and even if you don't have the exact model, one could be a rough guide.

To re-pack the cueing mechanism, you have to completely disassemble the tonearm. To compound the issue, they didn't use bearing caps at the tonearm bearings. Time to play 20 ball bearing pick up!

Well, I concede the point, if you have that problem - I hadn't realized it was so complicated. I only needed to do cleaning and lubrication (I thought) but then it became apparent I needed to move a feeler that was out of place, none of which was too difficult, though it took time to figure out how the mechanism worked.

I recently picked up a P/E 2040 turntable in near mint condition. This turntable caught my eye when I went to buy a pair of speakers off CL. So I took this home as well. I've never had experience with this brand, but bought it solely on looks. It also came with a Grado Green cartridge and stylus.

I can't find a whole lot of info on the model and wondering if anyone has experience with the 2040. I've seen pics of the standard model, but this one is wider with a sliding drawer for storing adapters, cartridges, discwasher, etc.

Surprisingly, it sounds very good, although the automatic functions don't always work well. I've been using it as a manual turntable, until I get this serviced.

Does anyone own or had experience with one of these? Below are some pics:

Unbelievable! I have the same turntable and base. I purchased mine used at the ripe old age of 14 from the house of Stein in Wpg. Mb in 1979 for $70 Cdn. Identical except mine has a smoked tint dust cover. Interesting to here the cartridge recommendations as I always wanted to install a Shure V15 in it! I have the original manual and if I recall correctly the platter is 7.8 lbs. Mine is in great condition also sitting in my old bedroom for the last 25 yrs under a sheet. I remember setting the speed with a paper disc "I think it was called a stroboscope" and tone arm weight with a a balance from Radio Shack. From your pics I see you have an identical sag of the front suspension as mine does. Front right dips low. Looked for adjustments year ago for that but never found any.

Open to suggestions.

Now I can't wait to get this old bad boy fired up again.

Next time I am back at home I will take some pics of it.

Take Care

LOL Turns out I had the original manual with me! 6'" away from me & my computer in file cabinet. Scanned in Word Attachment 330729an will try and attache pitch control adjustments. I do realize this thread is 3yrs old but who knows it may still be useful to some one.

Thanks ezrider4040

Just purchased a brand new 2020, so who knows when I might need it.

The 2020 is a complete table (no Plinth) except the cartridge holder is missing. If anyone reads this and has one to sell please pm me. Thaks

is a nice German Hifi Forum thread that covers deeply all the questions about PE Turntables
mechnical problems, spare parts and some other very fascinating rim driven machines...(not only from germany)

Another excellent forum for those quite rare PE tables:

http://www.dual-board.de/index.php?page=Board&boardID=81

In Germany the legendary PE Tables
(PE2020 and PE33-34) are considered as the only native Linn LP12 and Garrard 301 / 401 killers on a budget.
Duals and Elacs are also fine but do not match the quality of engineering of PE high tech mechanical tables.
PE was the best turntable brand in Germany.
(They were quite expensive their 2020/2040 and older PE33/34 types)

There were also other very nice PE super high quality tables made druing the mid 60s, t
he excellent (!) professional PE33 Studio (Rim belt combo driven
as swiss Thorens TD124!)

5zmfxj.jpg

PE33 Studio broadcast table, you can see the belt/rim drive and the highly valuable alloy thin wall cast (one single cast) Arm.
Arm is not ultra heavy, you can compare its weight to a normal Japanese S Arm
(medium heavy, so you can use normal compliance MM or MC pickups)

33c0o79.jpg

Ultra stiff cast alloy base, these PE33 truly match high end quality.
Platter bearing is one of the best I have ever seen, you can directly compare it to Thorens TD124 or Garrard 301 and other professional stuff,

Here you can see more details of those German rim / belt driven 1960s beauties:

http://www.google.de/search?hl=de&q...urce=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=2R90T_WCJ6_O4QSqm9SgDg

This ultra quality "PE33 Studio" was used during the 60s in German, swiss and austrian broadcast studio busses
(called SENDEWAGEN in German) the 33 looks compact but has same quality features as HUGE professional ultra heavy broadcast machines from EMT Franz, so the PE33 Studio was called by German Radio engineers
"POCKET EMT" = " WESTENTASCHEN EMT" :)
An unbelievable high quality machine with an excellent cast aluminium arm with super fine ball bearings all around.
Ingenenious as hell. (This machine has only auto shut off and arm lift at the end of the disc)

There als was its consumer brother PE34 Hifi, this machine has a pressed steel body but same excellenet characteristics as the
magnificient PE33 Studio.

Here is such an nice PE33 Studio machine in luxury plinth for sale:
http://www.hifigoteborg.se/store/description.php?id=639

The older PE RIM/BELT 1960s tables work best with DENON DL103 MC plus step up transformer.
The PE2020/2040 rim driven table (2020 is same machine as 2040 only a different plinth--in Germany we only had the 2020!)
works best with SHURE V15 Mark3 with JICO SAS needle. Nothing better than that on this table.
(Alternative similar good: PHILIPS GP 412 Mark 2 cartridge with original berryllium type of hyperellyptic needle)

Best regards from Germany

These machines were really nicely built, overengineered to all hell in the German tradition, complex to fix, and should have been better marketed in the US and Canada. I like them. They are very nice performers when in good order. And very nicely styled. Beautiful example, that TOTL base and dustcover are really the crowning touch. The PE 33 studio is a machine I lust after ever since I saw my wife's aunt's example of it, my in laws are trying to find me a restored one. Easily, one of the best idler decks ever made.

Appears to have a primitive solid state RIAA preamp on board.
There was another thread on one of the lesser PE stackers about crapalloy rot problems with the motor castings. Is there ay evidence of such anywhere on their upper end line?

Original state with defective oiler caps...those were dried out.
Dont try to use the PE TVV204 RIAA Phono Stage without replacing the old ERO 100 coupler caps,
otherwise you might ruin the valuable Germanium SIEMENS & HALSKE / MUNICH Transistors...
And even better, also replace the electrolytics to prevent AC Hum...

Dont use modern MKT or MKP coupler caps, for original sound again use oiler caps but those in PVC sealed body
German Wima Durolites and Hydras are quite good and last 4ever.

I also changed all the resistors to reduce noise level of the old danish VITROHM Brand carbon composites...
now that thing is pretty quite..love its crisp and clear sound...you wont believe that such a simple cirquit can sound
so good.
Sometimes K.I.S.S. is just right even for German products ---Keep it simple stupid :)

Thats the RIAA Phonostage with 4 selected Siemens AC 151 Germanium transistors in 100% restored condition.
Sounds great, quite high gain no problem with that especially connecting the PE33
directly to an old Stereo Tube amp Stage....

Simple stage but nicely made as the early DUAL TVV43 Stages.
The PE Phonostage was engineered by Sennheiser of Germany for PE.

If you pull it out of its interface slot, thers normal Phono signal to the output of the table for external RIAA stages...

No the PE33 hasnt rot problems...will I have never seen one with rotted alloy.

Its ultra high quality--so high that it even surpasses any british machine.

You will notice the difference if you compare the Pe33 directly to Brit deck from
Garrard...Garrard is heavier but touches like a lorry, the PE like a Mercedes Benz 300S from 1963.

Best regards

I was expecting Telefunken black bullet transistors, I don't usually see carbon composition resistors in German gear that late. Not so primitive after all, most of the earlier solid-state audio stuff was dreadful, most phono stages then got by with 2 germanium transistors per channel as per the original Fisher phono pre which mimicked the typical 2x 12AX7/ECC83 budget tube phono in solid state.

Well the eraliest TVV 204 had black Valvo Transistors with glass corpus, this late one from mid 1965/66 has the newer Siemens & Halske in hat shaped steel corpus.
Both version had the carbon resistors....the danish ones are not as good as the very silent german sheet resistance
carbon type "Beschlag". Dont know why they used these danish here.
I dont like Vitrohms they tend to drift off value and give more noise...same problems with Brit stuff in Leak amps...
Beyschlag carbon sheet type resistors found use in professional Telefunken and Neumann broadcast machinery
(V69 studio tube amp, mic/mixer consoles etc..) so they were more expensive and kept their values allmost 4 ever.
They can stay, you cant improve much with changing to newer blue metal-film type resistors.
But I strictly remove those noisy Vitrohms werever I find them.

This is the shematic of the PE TVV 204 stage, simple but nice sound (if restored).

Lovly German made E1 "peoples TV Set" :) (But Hitler never gave this toy to his people...instead of this he gave
us shitty war...)
Nevertheless a very nice TV from the Olympia 1936 era...hmmm thats truly a technological masterpiece,
was allready equiped with a square screen tube B/W
and it was capable for cable TV. (Connected to Reichssender Witzleben near Berlin)
Picture was quite good.
Ive seen a video on youtube.
Some were built by Loewe / Graetz some by Telefunken and some by Deutsche Fernseh AG / AEG.
Rare as hell today,
Some stolen ones remained in the ex USSR Museum Moscow or Leningrad.

Best regards

Is there any way to translate the linked forums into English? :scratch2:
Looks like there is a ton of info there that's not available to us here since they weren't that popular here.

Bing translator is one of many ways to do it (replace Babelfish, which I preferred):

http://www.microsofttranslator.com/

You may or may not be able to make heads or tails out of the result, but it does translate as best it can.

I appreciate the reply. :thmbsp:

You're right, it's not a whole lot clearer even though the words are recognizable. Sounds like a high school language class or a sit-com about recently arrived immigrants. :D

"Hi, your loved ones!

Alas, their Teutons with your beer gravity impossible the!

My boss went pee nervous 4 times during the listening session and had to admit but completely women and pretty much demoralized"

Oh, well.... :sigh: I suppose AK is equally incomprehensible translated to another language... especially stuff like scroe, woogers, etc. Makes another reason for using proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Please Help

So, long story short, I need to somehow replace the arm and dustcover on a Perpetuum Ebener 3060. I know that PE was affiliated with Dual by this time and am wondering if any of you Dual people know of a Dual model that had the same arm or have any suggestions as to how to proceed.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
