I have a copy, somewhere. Don't remember loving it but I know I liked it back in the day.
 
A great record, full of ramshackle charm and fun. Well recorded too. I have the original vinyl and some midline CD version as well.

Ronnie Lane's April Fool is my favorite track, FWIW.

Townshend's first true solo album, Who Came First is also very, very good. There is a very nice (albeit, I believe, out of print) CD from Rhino with bonus tracks including Big T's original demo of The Seeker.
 
I love that album, and have since it first came out. The remastered CD is a substantial improvement over the first CD release; don't have the vinyl anymore.
 
Very good album, IMO. Sounds good n rich on the Classic Records 180g remaster. Bought this along with David Crosby's If Only I Could Remember My Name also the Classic records version. Got people on it from every west coast band of the day. Big, rich sonics.

Here's a funny story about that.

That's Michael Fremer's COVER that they scanned for that reissue. They also forgot to take off the LAST sticker on the back, so that also came in on the new cover....

That's one of my fave Townsend LPs.
I brought it to one of our local SMAC meetings at Squids place and played an entire side of the gang.
Rumor has it that the UK Polydor copies are much richer than the MCAs usually found here.

Just ordered it from Amazon. Bought the new Who album and it made me think about it. I used to have it on cassette. As I remember it was one I listened to a lot. Can't wait for it to get here.
 
I still have my original vinyl copy, 30 some years & I still love it! Ronnie was quite a character- too bad he's gone. That new Who album- is it the collection LP?
 
This album made me love The Who all over again....really supurb from needle down Mix 1 to track end on Mix 2...need to think about getting this on 180G
 
Miss that album. Must search it out, again. In my mid 20's I pawned all my albums (400+) and regret it every day.
 
Love the album. I still have my vinyl copy I bought in '77. Street in the City is amazing.
 
Shopping around I see the 30th anniversary edition on CD,
Two disc,Remastered, with what looks like 3 additional songs,Humm...
 
That is one I never heard, have to try and get a listen. Ronnie Lane does play on "Evolution", which appeared on Who Came First
 
I was going to start a thread on this album tonight(9 and a half years after the thread was started and abandoned). A search dug up this thread. So as a testimony to Sluggo's love and homage to this album I'm including my thoughts here.

What an album. I got turned onto this in about 1980. I bought an original UK pressing about 2 years ago. Just crazy good music and musicianship. If this album is not the high water mark for all who took part, I'd be surprised. Just a bona fide masterpiece. That is all I can say about it.

Well put. As in any discipline, I think, true masters make it look easy. And the musicians on this album make it look easy indeed.
The fact that the songs and the recording values are also superb doesn't hurt, either.

Speaking of Rough Mix, this seems worth mentioning in case anyone who stumbles across this thread isn't aware of it.

I also really enjoy this album. It really sneaks up on you after about the third play, and you start wondering how great a band they would've made. Oh wait, there was that band called the Who who weren't too shabby, and then there's Small Faces, and Faces...
 
The one great thing about Townshend as a composer & as a musician was (and I hate to use the past tense, but I shall) that he understood, and "leveraged", the importance of dynamics in music. He wasn't afraid to mix very subtle details into bombastic rock & roll.

here's a seminal example :)


He wasn't afraid to play with tempo, either.
