So I said I would make a thread for this, just getting around to look at it. Never seen one with quite this issue, amp board looks like it got very very toasty.
There's melted plastic on the top above the amp board:
And the plastic caps on both main filters are rounded from heat, and there's several shrunk casings on the amp board.
What I've noticed is that protection kicks in if the volume is turned up above 1/4 without any load. There's no DC measured on the input from the Preamp and the DC on the output before the relay closes is negligible. Going to see what the bias is at given the heat issues. Betting on bad MV-13 diodes but at this point who knows.
He did take great shape of this unit though, frontplate is pretty much perfect.
Once I track down the issue this one will be getting a full rebuild.
