Should I take a test unit

:scratch2:Should I take an audio amp to apply power to these and if so would something small suffice or do I need to load up a 100w plus unit. All I want to know is if they at least work, don't expect perfect performance. I spoke with the lady today and if they are still there I am going to go have a look on Saturday. If they are already gone then they weren't meant to come here. She says they were working fine 2 years ago when her hubby left them there and he had used them for band equipment but had gotten better equipment so left them.:smoke::smoke::smoke:

Spoke to the lady again today and she assured me that I would get first crack at them. After asking a few more questions, it appears that the horns are not there. After doing some research on at the Lansing Heritage site, the description she gives me of the other 2 cabinets and their origional application, I have a feeling that what I may be going to go look are probably A7-500's and A7-500XLR's. The only thing about that is the XLR's are supposed to have a pair of 16"'s not 12"s. Either way, I am most likely going to take them. The cabinets were origionally flat black but she painted them pastel red with house paint, hopefully water based. She said it was a cheap paint.:smoke::smoke::smoke:

If the original paint is flat black, they're older boxes.

It'll be very interesting to see some pics.

Also take notice if they're constructed of 5/8 (mod 825) or 3/4 (mod 828) inch plywood.

The 12 inch woofers kinda throw a wrench in the works, there were never any VOTT's with 12 inch woofers. I suspect either the term VOTT is being abused, which is common as people like to call anything with the altec name and a horn VOTT, but that's doesn't make it true.

Whatever happens, if you're not taking a vehicle they'll fit in, take tools and immediately pull the drivers and bring them home with you if you make a deal. Don't make the mistake i have in the past only to have the lady hand you back your money when you go to pick them up because she's sold them to somebody else for more.

I made arrangements with a friend to take me down there as he has a full size pick up.:D Rickr I appreciate your restraint. That's just one of the fine qualities that seems to abound in the AK family.:smoke::smoke::smoke:

Hmmm, I am seeing that there are quite a few members in the PHX. area. I am planning on a hosting a "Dogpatch" theme Halloween party this year and will make sure to post an invite notice when all the particulars are determined. Since I am a little ways out of town, it will be a "check in your keys" event so as not to give Sheriff Joe any fodder for his Tent City. With any luck, the boxes I am going to look at will be the main speaks for that event.:smoke::smoke::smoke:

Picked up

These have to be the ugliest cabinets I havw ever bought. I didn't test them before I picked them up but I did open them to have a peek at the drivers. All drivers are Altec and appear to be pretty old. Got them home checked the wiring on all cabinets and hooked first the cabs with the 2 12's by themselves and they sounded very good although a little lacking on the bottom. Then I hooked up the A 7 cabs by themselves and as expected.. excellant lows little else. Wired the little cabinets to the HF output on the A7's and bingo. Within 15 minutes or so a neighbor from about 200ft away came up screaming at me that she couldn't hear her TV. They are clean and clear from a block away.
Getting ready to pour here so I need to get them under cover for the night. I will open them and opst all driver pics tomorrow, weather permitting. I am seriously considering building new boxes and keeping them. We will see. I habve no plans on making them my daily drivers as I just don't have the space. Oops almost forgot, all preliminary sound testing was done using my 9900z. At 5 on the volume, you can't stand within 6' of the front of them without experiencing pain. Must be time for the 32db plugs.:smoke::smoke::smoke:

They are 30+ years old and were actual band speakers that bounced from club to club throughout the Midwest and even though they have the metal protective corners, they are pretty war weary. The smaller cabinets are MDF and it is starting to crumble. I started a new post to try and ID them and will post some better detailed images later today. I really wish they were on casters. Besides the WAF on them as they look is probably going to be pretty low. Hehe, mine won't see them until she comes out on Tuesday. :smoke::smoke::smoke:

Bummer. The lower cabs should be fun. Have you done any bent ply work? If you disassemble the old cabs properly, you'll have a nice jig to clamp your new bends to.

If you prefer working with MDF, the 1/4" sold in most supply yards is not thin enough to bend (and you can't very well steam it). However, I've been told 1/8" exists so that might be the ticket.
