Phono input without phono section?

I have this exact preamp and it does NOT have an actual phono preamp inside. The input is EXACTLY the same input as all the rest, it just has a label on it that says 'phono'. You can use the input for anything you want. I have a standalone phono preamp plugged into the phono input. This preamp is stellar sounding and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the labeling nor design. This preamp is designed for people who wish to use their own phono preamp instead of a built in one.

They should have just done this. Phono-preamp board with an RIAA EQ prolly can fit on one chip these days. Well, one board with minimal components.

But, then again, we wouldn't have anything to talk about.

Since the preamp is well regarded and presumably they knew it didn’t have onboard phono than the labels would seem like a bonus. If you didn’t want to run an outboard phono pre and play LPs you might look elsewhere.
 
I guess I'll have to get rid of my preamp. Its input labels don't match most what I have connected, so I suppose I'm in violation of some sort of audiophile connection code of conduct.

Can I keep the Bottlehead that has no labels, or is that also in violation somehow?
 
I’ve got my unlabeled bottlehead. Thing about it is the the input selector has 6 or so stops in it but only 3 are connected to RCA jacks as inputs. Another bit of confusion for those that haven’t been playing along all these years and stay with proper mid-70s vintage gear with a known subset of inputs and a real phono input for a turntable. Heaven forbid these guys see a period Onkyo without an Aux input but three tape loops.
 
Similar on mine, 6 positions, 3 inputs, #4 is a Bluetooth / DAC module I stuck inside. 5 and 6 are shorted to ground just so it doesn't hum from open connections.

I need to swap the power transformer to something just a little bit more stout so I can power that BT module internally. Right now it requires a wall wart or a USB cable to a computer if its in DAC mode. Not the best unit but it was like 30 bucks and its highly convenient on my test bench.

Yes! The schematic tells all! Most of the high-level inputs are in parallel! Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent. ;)

My Classe Audio 30 pre has a normal input labeled phono. They sold an optional phono Eq chip to plug in if you like. I like most use it with an stand alone Phono Preamp.

I think it’s less a condition or rule that inputs be matched to their labels and way more about needing certain parameters for a TT to produce decent sound. It’s surely not just an audiophile label adherence thing.
