photo assignments

I don't get the problem? This is why I like the kinda class idea, with the critique idea spin to this. Only problem I see is that lone Texas star on a US flag.. :p:

Simi.. We are just having a little fun at Jessie's expense. I guess the bad news is he is not here to defend himself.

Sorry for causing any confusion. The assignment for the month is to post a 4th of July photo. Choose your poison, whatever fits the bill. BBQ, Parade, Fireworks you name it. Just as long as it deals with the spirit of the 4th.

Thanks,
Bill

I got all that.. I just didn't get the cropped pic posted from yours.. like there was a problem with the picture? All I see is the lone star, and I noticed that before the crop was posted, thought it was ironic you was from TX< and the flag had a single star... My heart is more in TX than anywhere else.. so I catch that stuff.. most my family lives there now, and all my brothers are Raiders..

Like I said we were messing with Jessie, If anyone is qualified to grade us it would be the master. Just pick up that camera and take some pics tomorrow. WE need to see your Holiday photos.

x1000 on all accounts.

And I wish everyone a happy 4th filled with friends and family.

I'm not leaving the house tomorrow, so not really going to be around anything 4th-y :( Too many people around here to enjoy the time out.. (bad traffic)

4th of July Means Family To Me

Especially since that's when we usually see my son and his family 'cause that's when the Army has block leave. These are from July 4, 2006:

Just starting the BBQ. We have the essential ingredients desire and a cold case of Pacifico. (TOD = 9:47 pm)

Daughter and Daughter-In-Law enjoying some fresh grilled corn on the cob. (TOD = 10:19 PM)

Goofin' for the camera while playing Bocce. Clearly the grandson is confused by this. (TOD 10:50 PM)

Only in Alaska do you start your 4th of July BBQ at 9:30 pm.

Here's one from the night before. We were playing Bocce by a lake and this guy wanted to play through. We let him.

Were going to a friends very nice hilltop home in Nellie Gale Ranch tomorrow. I'll take my camera and tripod and see what I can do.

Oh he'll figure out the difference soon enough, he's 10 now.

He's not scary. Take nuns, now nun's are scary. I still won't go near the penguins at Sea World. Just bounce an eraser off the back of the vato's noggin when he's at the board and set him right. Nothin' to it.

Well, we kinda of painted ourselves into a corner with the subject matter. It should have been a broader topic for a longer amount of post time.

Ideally it will build and allow for participants that do not have the subject in archive to go out and take the needed photo to contribute to the assignment. The whole purpose of an assignment is an effort to expand or portfolio or escape the photo ruts we all get into from time to time.

Any ideas on a continuing subject for the month? Let's try and keep it in line with the current theme as much as possible.

I suppose "hot summer days" since that's what 2/3 of us are experiencing.

If I may, perhaps this needs two parallel-running threads that are linked to one another; one for the banter, the other for images ONLY. That way, if the images are critiqued (is that the plan?), the critiq'er does not have to pass through a bunch of mundane nonsense to assess the images. And HE posts his critiques at the end of that particular image thread.

Then, start a new image thread for the new assignment.

EDIT: The image thread should be a sticky for easy retrieval- the discussion thread linked from there.

The problem is that July 4th is one day. Not a month. About all July 4th pictures can be posted within 2-3 days, giving time for post processing (except for those on a vacation for a week, and out of town or country).

Even on broader subjects, a month may be too long for most people? I don't know. People tend to get bored fairly easy, when something goes on for a long time. I've seen forums that had POTM (Photo Of The Month) contests, that had pretty decent turnouts. But this isn't a contest. Also, the POTM contests usually allow just one entry per person, so you're not bombarded with a lot of photos from each person.

Most contests that the only thing you win is bragging rights, are Weekly Challenges. At least the ones I've seen were. I remember awhile back, someone tried to start one of those here, and it didn't go over so well. I'm a member of another forum that does a Weekly Challenge. During the week, you can post more than one picture that fits the subject, but before voting time, you must tell which picture is your entry. At the end of the week, a poll is set up with the pictures in it to vote on them. You have 24 hrs. to vote, and the poll closes. The one with the most votes chooses the next weeks subject, and sets up the poll for that weeks voting. It averages 5-6 entries each week. We have had as many as 10 before. The Challenge week runs from Thursday to Wednesday evening, which the poll is set up then. That way, voting is during the week, while everyone is still around. Some are gone on weekends.

I don't know what the answer is. You know it's hard to please everyone. Someone will always dislike the way it's being done. I think the challenge works pretty well at the other forum, because it's a lot smaller forum, so there's no so many temperaments to deal with. Good luck figuring it out................ :D

EDIT:
Also, in the challenge, the photos must be taken during the week of the challenge.
