It's tedious - but not too bad overall. Just have to be careful with some of the fragile plastics .

I consider the 1229 to be the benchmark of turntables regardless of expense.
What surprised me is that it sat on FBM for 5 weeks.

Been using David’s for many years with good results. Congratulations on the 1229. Have multiple Duals. The 1229s are getting pricy. Found one on FB marketplace for 125. Seller informed me it wasn’t working. Seller was near by. Took it anyway. Came with nylon laminate base and cover I had not seen. Won’t be using either. Did the follow:
Freed speed slector
Disassembled cleaned and oiled motor
Stuerpimple was gone. Used Davids
Replaced the sled with a Best
Had an odd ball cart. Had a nice M44.
Had a nice German sourced base
Have 8 Duals. The 1229 is my last addition. It’s working and sounding well. Build quality is not quite as nice as my 1219s. Pleased with the results. Using my Marantz that was in my BR. Cleaned controls while moving it. Lives in my office.

My favorite is the 1249. They fixed all the issues with the 1229 (dearing ring, still VTA, motor noise) and made probably the best changer ever.

Cosmetics on this ( mainly the base) are going to be a challenge. I've had the Best sled before. I had a 1249 that I bought a kit from a fellow in Canada to fix the 840 motor fast speed issue. Wish I hadn't sold it.

No, they did not. The dearing ring assembly is as fragile as the 1219 / 29´s.
Like all my Duals. Have to be my 1219s. Have early and later versions. My first 1219 I have had since 2014. Did a complete service back then. About every 5-6 years I do the motor clean and oil. First cleanings are hard when they sit in a damp basement. Once done and living in a dry room, motors come apart easy. Done that 1219 twice since 2014. Twenty minutes and done. Have 4 systems. This 1219 is tied a Marantz 5100 powering a BR, DR,office. It’s been around a long time. My second 1219 I got off Bartertown. Came with a broken arm. Found the piece the sled attaches to. Lives with a 1019 and 1009SK in my Musicroom. This is where I do serious listening. As mentioned, just got a 1229. Working well. Was in a damp basement. That motor came apart hard. Broke a connector on the switch. Thought the break was in the motor. walked away. Have a motor. Next day found in the switch. Fixed and runs. There is a lot of satisfaction working on my. Dual family.
I’ve got all 3 and a 1229q. The 1249 VTA is the smoothest.

Well, that´s correct.
My favourite Dual? Should be easy to answer. My 1229 I bought new then, even when the first 701 and 1249 were sold. I sold and serviced them for a living, that was my learned job. But - the easy answer is not always the correct one. I got a near mint 1228 from the neighborhood recently, after servicing it and equipping it with my Ortofon M20E, for which I have several new original stylii, I rotate this very often into the main system. It sounds wonderful and is quiet. Really quiet. And then there is the 502 with unbroken tonearm bearing I rescued from my sister. She wanted to throw that thing away, together with a Rotel receiver! Family! The normal procedure, cleaning, lubricating the proper way, it is really good with OM-30, ADC Astrion or XLM III, Shure M95 ED (NOS). And the like. So I love using this machine for listening. Well, yes, and I was able to get a near mint (really!) 1019 via our German Dual forum (Dual-Board.de), from a fellow member only 14 km away (it stood framed by two Thorens 124 ...). This turntable, especially with the ADC 990 XE, is a powerhouse.
So what about the 1229? Well, it awaits a total rebuilt. One of my two motors is already done. But I am not in a hurry. I am sure I will like to use it, but the others will get equal playtime.
Quintessence: Each of the Duals from the middle ranges on are lovely machines. Even 1214 HiFi or 1225 allow to play music in really good quality - if they are meticulously serviced.

I like the 1225/1226/1228 series. After Dual bought PE there was a PE version. Found 4048 on EBay. Don’t recall why I emailed the seller. He wanted $60 plus shipping. Ended up with it for that including shipping. Its cam was frozen. Came a nice base and cover. Serviced it. Ran in my music room with a 1219 and 1019. Kept it 9 months. Put a Best sled on it with a Shure M91ED. This series Dual are solid performers. One thing the seller never mentioned or pictured was a Shure V15 III cart. After unpacking I moved the box and heard a rattle. It was a V15! Its stylus survived the trip undamaged. Original Shure factory VR35HE. The PE went to a customer. Kept that V15. Lives on my musicroom 1219. still have the 1019 and added a 1009SK. Use all of them. No more tape, just records.
As mentioned I got a 1229. It finishes my Dual family. It lives in my home office. Was listening to it yesterday through a Marantz 2220B while paying bills. Nice table. Sounded good. Will be keeping it. Stopped what I was doing and listened to the music.
^^^My first really good TT was a PE that I bought about 1974. Was excellent until a crazy ex-wife tossed it onto the lawn. Couldn't fix it

Well. After trying to fix the issues discussed the 1229 was a total bust. May send to Bill. In the meantime, I picked up a really nice 1219. It had it's share of just sitting issues. Single/Multi stuck, but not broke. Speed lever stuck. Would switch on, motor turned, but idler not making contact. Arm lift worked. Arm dropped slow. Would return to rest, but not power off. So I dropped a little 3N1 oil on the dearing washer. Heated with a hair drier and slowly applied pressure back & forth. Finally loosed it up, it did not break. Works now. Checked all contacts points under the hood. Worked them. Now will power off. The speed control worked back and forth. Got it to stay at the 33 speed. Can't get it to the 45 or 78 speed. Which is not big deal, Hardly ever play 45's. May still send it to Bill to give it his special touch.
