Picked up a Paragon...

Among the three ring radiators they would be my choice. Either way love reading this thread. Glad to see someone restoring one of these iconic JBL systems. They make quite a statement. The professional number for the 076 is 2403.
That 076 is interesting. I hope it doesn't have the "peashooter" effect of the older 075. That's what I like about the 077 — it doesn't have the obvious, off-beam effect (well, at least to me).

;)

They have a similar dispersion of the 077’s but the biggest benefit imho is their ability to-play down to around 5K
Where as the 077s are extremely limited below 7K

Interesting, again! What midrange horns did JBL put in the L-220 and L-222? I know nothing about them, either.

Thanks!

Some later 4-1/2’ cones, ceramic Le5-? with a bigger pair of lenses in front of them
And that’s why those speakers failed. All JBL needed to make them great was a pair of Dlh175’s
Instead of the cone mids. Their bass and highs were excellent

Really? They had cone midrange drivers hiding behind those lenses? Not horns? No wonder the 076 had to dip down to 5kHz.

Strange...

They used the LE-5 and the "wavy" plate.

Note that this picture is from the 1979 Home catalog:

But, if we look at the 1979 list of available components..., no 076:

At this point in time with the Paragon, and the Marantz 7c hopefully it has a nice case and faceplate,
May as well get the Marantz 9 mono’s for the ultimate vintage system with the best Shelf Jewelry Factor
You jonesing for a nice 10B tuner to complete the package?

... what do you all think about the JBL SE408S? Seems to measure quite well, silicon version looks like a nice amp. I've only ever seen one powered Paragon. Wonder why it has two cut-outs in that case, since the amp isn't bridgeable, and the cut-outs are mirrored? Sticker is only on one side.

I recall a picture where someone did put a horn in these. The horn assembly was too long and they cut a hole in the back. It appeared that they put some effort into it. Had what looked like seal around the magnet sticking half way through the rear panel.

Westlake used them in thier TOTL monitors and Hi-Fi towers. They were particular about having these specific tweets.

As for the L-220, IMO never was so lousy sounding a speaker so well made, a major distortion and compression generator; the LE-14 woofer was overtaxed for the intended use and the voicing was boom and sizzle. I was given 4 of the things, gave 2 away and parted out the others, a guy in Norway was keen for the 15" passive radiators. The boxes I sealed and used with Bozak coaxials as surround speakers. The cats eye tweeter is good, way better than the bullet but not better than the slot as my memory serves me; it was a long time ago.

Can I ask how you compared the 076 in the L-220 versus the 077 in the L300 (or others).

Mange tak!
