Pickering XV-15

Love them too :) I've also got a Stanton 500 in use, with a spherical for older records. Sounds great! Yes - highs aren't that clear or detailed on that one, but it takes care of sibilance on that old vinyl. Enjoying the music, that's the key element here. Whatever some people might say that Stanton/Pickering is crap, these are great carts :)

I will definitely be ordering a D6800EEE-S from Jico for the XV-15. :thmbsp:

Check to make sure the cantilever rubber bearing hasn't turned to goo ... happened to a couple of my 625E's over the years. Is that something that's replaced with a rebuild?

Send your old stylus instead to Expert Stylus or SoundSmith and get it retipped. It will be much better than Jico.
Expert Stylus sounds interesting - do you have any experience with them? What does the frequency response look like after a retip? I'm not sure they replace the rubber suspension.

pickering

Very much boils down to different styli. Conical or elliptical with varying degrees of flexibility as you go up.

Conical hides pops and click pretty good. Also diminishes high end slightly.

Elliptical gets it all out. But clicks and pops very apparent.
Quality of styli also gets more music out but will cost more.
I am learning this all again. I was a Pickering nut way back in the 70's but lost interest in the TT stuff along the way. Gave away my picks.

Finally was reborn a year ago and now have a couple of XV-15 1200e bodies(supposedly all the same with different styli making differences) and 4 different styli for different records. Old mono, old stereo and new stereo.

Expert Stylus Company took over the custom archival stylus business from Stanton, Expert Stylus knows more than anyone in the aftermarket about making a correct tip for the Stanton and Pickering lines, they had the blessing of Stanton for making custom products for 500 and 680/681 and Pickering variants. And in the laboratory, the Expert retips measure to spec.

Kent, do you know of an email address for Expert Stylus? With a simple Google search, all I can find is their street address and telephone number.

Thanks,
John

I'll look for an email address. By the way, the Paratrace tip is the closest new thing to the Stereohedron line contact tip, they are very similar in profile and sonics to each other.

Any idea on price for a paratrace? It's really a pity they don't have a website. Heck, I would even offer them one, seeing they are THE company for Stanton/Pickering :)

I run two Gerrard tables with the Pickering xv-15. I absolutely love this cartridge. Put new needles in them. Just amazing sound.
