Pickering XV-15

I was recently given a XV15. The plastic housing on the stylus is wider than the cartridge body. As a result the stylus can "spin" in the cartridge, creating azimuth problems. Of course, I haven't tried it, and won't until the stylus is replaced.

My question is this, is the stylus plastic housing normally wider than the cart body on the XV15? Or perhaps this is the wrong stylus?

My concern is the fact that the stylus can rotate on the cartridge. Does this mean the cartridge is damaged and I shouldn't waste money on a new stylus?

I had the same problem with an after-market stylus

The original D625 fit snug

The plastic part of a Stanton stylus (680/81) that will fit an XV-15, but it wraps around it and doesn't spin. The generic stylus I have on my XV-15 is slightly wider than the cartridge body (as was the Pickering D400 that was on it), but that doesn't lead to it spinning. It shouldn't spin in the body if the shank that goes into the body fits right.

It sounds like you have an earlier stylus meant for the regular V-15 cartridges instead of the narrower ones for the XV-15s.

:thmbsp: That was my first thought as well. If it's wide enough to spin it almost has to be the V15 type stylus.

Whatever the problem, I'd say it isn't with the cartridge so don't toss it!

Some information: The Stanton 681 is no less than the record industry reference standard for many years for many good reasons. Cutting engineers, A&R at record companies, AM and FM Program Directors, and discriminating AM and FM broadcast stations and many others used the EEE for their professional reference standard. As well as myself. Most of your favorite records were first auditioned post 1967 on one on some kind of 681. Your gentlemen who cut the record in the first place also had them for playback and measurements on test cuts. The 681 A was the standard used for playback calibration checks of cutting heads for testing and measurements.

There isn't a 680EEE. There's a 680EE, a 681EE, a 681EEE and some others but yours is probably among these.

They take the same stylus because they're the same cartridge, two of the seemingly infinite variety of Pickering V-15 cartridges. The different model numbers are related to the specs of the stylus originally fitted to them.

The Pickering V-15 is the same as the Stanton 500 (and also the 400). Styli from one will fit the other. These are moving magnet type cartridges.

Similarly, the Stanton 680/681 cartridges are the same as the Pickering XV-15. Like the 500 and V-15, the styli are interchangeable on these too. Unlike the 500 and V-15, these are moving iron type cartridges.

They are also a cut above the 500 and V15 in performance.

very ineresting ,thank you for giving me that info,im now thinking if the 680ee that i have will even work with my system as my pre amp has a setting for moving magnet or moving coil and no setting for moving iron ,and if it will work by any chace whats the best stylus that you would use as im going to get the best i can,for both the 680ee and the 500,at the moment im using a audio technica at12e and was woundering if the stanton (pickering) carts will be as good or better ?? im finding the at carts are a bit bass shy or is that not the normal way they sound ??i also have a akai rs-100 and a technics epc-290c might get a stylus for those to to try them out or are they throw away carts??ahahha i found them in a box of audio stuff i won on a auction ,i have a few sansui ones as well but not sure if they be any good

Seems to, but does not. The 680/681 is moving-iron, where the magnet is inside the body, and the 880/881 is moving-magnet, where the magnet is in the stylus. Stylus swapping between these two cartridges is bound to be disappointing.

Like many people here, I have both cartridges and the 880/881 is clearly a step up, well worth trying to get hold of.

personally,I never use replacement styli on the XV15(or 680/681)cartridges but only NOS styli!
look at pickeringuk.com
turntableneedles have a very nice authentic D625 D-DJ at 39.95$(very cheap is it not?):thmbsp:

Scroe of the day :D a local record store had a XV-15 cart. But they usually don't sell parts. They had this lying around for spares. Got it for 20 bucks. Seeing I once found 3 NOS styli for.. well.. nothing

This is an amazing cart. I'm loving the sound. Bass goes deep, highs extend pretty well. :music: Handles sibilance very well too. Much better than my Nagaoka MP-110 :thmbsp:
