Not to split hairs over the title of this thread, but some of these amps have watt meters not VU meters. They are all very cool looking though.

To be even more 'accurate', they are voltmeters, not wattmeters. They just measure the output voltage, with no regard for the true current (and hence the power).

Hi Stuwee,

Interesting SAE, never seen this early model before, was the fan original OEM for this design? Pity the photos don't show the meter lights in the dark.

Bart

Just think, for the money you get all that dust and neglect too! Probably a fair amount of multi-legged critters have made their home inside. Amazing the amount of lazy folks just harvesting money on that auction site.

Best,

Paul :thmbsp:

Actually Paul, the guy was pretty legit, answered a ton of Q's on the amp. All his refs he gave me checked out. I was told here awhile back that the dust thing means it hasn't been opened up to see where the magic smoke came from after a wake up test from a long slumber. As to the critter's:dunno: I would have opened it up and checked it outside:D. These are rare beasties with the meters.

As to the fan, it's a common mod, all of the few of these I've seen had one. The owners all say it's a precaution. So I'll ask Luther about this. The war chest will reach the level of point of no return someday:D I've never heard one but, very good reviews on this particular model lead me on the chase. the meters were a bonus. Yes, my nose is gettin' longer:D:D 200+ a side of pure James Bongiorno genuis.

Nice modified Yamaha PC2002M with LED meters. Been thinking about just the same mod.

Here's my Baron when I first got it.

Looks a lot better when it's powered up, like this:

In normal lighting they're more of a light tan color, not so yellow. One of these days I'll get a better pic of it parked on its custom Sound Anchors stand and the meters on.

Yes, when I bought it in 1998 it was $4000. with 5881 tubes/$4500. with EL34's, but I got it for a demo price. A few months later I sent it to Mesa for the WIMA caps upgrade & mods (about $700. with shipping) which helped to smooth out the mids and allowed use of any 5881, EL34, or KT-88 type tubes. With KT-90's it ups the power output to 225 wpc (from 150 wpc with 5881/EL34), but you have to change the bias setting which is no biggie.

Wow, that Baron amp sure is something else. What's its story?

Here's another contribution: The Marantz Esotec SM-6:
