Pilot 1078 Console

Just picked up one of these off my local craigslist yesterday. Inside it has a Garrard turntable, SA-232 push-pull el84 amplifier and 590 Preamp/Tuner. The cabinet is teak and everything looks to be in good shape but I have to be honest, I don't know much about tube gear or Pilot for that matter either. Price was $150.

What do I have here?

Hiya,

A good deal IMHO.

What are the output tubes on this jobber and also pictures please. :)

EDIT: EL84's of course because it states it clearly in the original post. Must drink more Caffeine.

Pffft.

You don't want that amp:no::no:
That's right...

I do! :D

Dude! Ya done good.

The SA-232 is one of the classic vintage amps that everyone wants, and for good reason - they sound very nice.

Have someone check it out before you fire it up. They tend to run hot to begin with, and more than a few have self-immolated.

So the amp is definately a keeper. What about the Preamp/Tuner section?
Probably nice too, but it may be more mucking around than it's worth to you. An overhaul will cost some change.

If it were me, I'd sell the preamp/tuner to recoup your out of pocket, and maybe net enough extra to have the amp rebuilt.

I run my 232 with a passive preamp in front of it and it sounds very nice.

I have the board and chassis to build a Pass B1 passive preamp with buffer around here somewhere... :scratch2: :D

Hiya,

I love those old brass/chrome tuners that Pilot used. They are real lookers and well built.

So yes you should be able to find someone to take the other parts and recoup most of your investment.

Very nice! I saw that listing and was hoping you'd decide to pick it up. You're getting quite the collection.

That preamp/tuner possibly has some very good tubes in there. Does it have the metal or plastic knobs?

Yes I am, and I still don't know anything about tubes. :D

When I get home tonight I am going to snap some pictures but I think the tuner/pre has metal knobs.

Oh, cool.

Maybe the seller would let you post the pics from the CL ad?

the fa-590 is just a slightly less kicka** preamp/tuner than the fa-690. should easily recoup your dosh and get the amp serviced, and maybe a six pack or two to drink while listening. i've seen them go as high as $400 on ebay.

Ohhh,

Now I am really jealous as that is a "Baby" console and one that I like as it fits :)

Nice find and if I was closer I would be all over that cab if you were getting rid of it.

Pics!

Here are some pictures. Also, I looked through some of the tubes in this thing and the first ones that caught my eye are telefunken 12ax7's in both the preamp and amp. Output tubes were one sylvania and one ge....

Ohh....Did I forget to mention it came with all the original paperwork? :D
