It could be designed for a ceramic cart, which is much higher output. Anyone have a schematic?
tomcza11 mentioned above his 402 came with a schematic, wonder if he can scan a copy and post here and add to the AK Database? Would be interesting to see, looks a bit like a stereo PP EL84 design. It's got phono Stereo and phono Mono inputs, but may be optimized for ceramic as Jay mentioned.
If guesses are correct, could be one of the 12AX7's (which might be in the phono circuit) is wonky. Could test tubes, sub tubes, or trace out the connections between phono inputs, to tube(s), then selector switch to see which tube could be suspect.
Here's an AK 402 restoration thread with some additional pics. There seems to have been at least 4-6 owners over the past 3 years or so.

I snagged the 402. Its a 1959 "Soloist" 3402 Danish style with a very clean cabinet. Fairly cheap. It's went straight to the doctor for a look see before putting her through the paces. Came with all the doc's incl. schematic. Will scan it along with some pics for AK when I get it back.

I'm surprised the Pilot boys haven't rushed to this thread in droves.
I'm NO expert but there are numerous threads here that will tell you that Pilot amps (their tube amps) were really pretty good, well worth picking up and restoring; but as they moved into the SS period of their existence their amps became less and less desirable and eventually questionable!
Now those who "know" can "show"!!

One interesting feature is the AM/FM switch. I hear this was called a marriage saver switch. It splits the signals so dad could listen to the AM ballgame in one room and mom could listen to her FM music program in the main room. Its a little sexist but that was 1960-61.
Actually, stereo was broadcast that way for a few years... AM on one channel, FM for the other. Didn't last, as multiplex stereo came out in 1962...

those look really nice! i just got the manual for a pilot tube amp with some other gear that i bought. The owner gave the amp to GW but forgot he had the manual :tears:

Bumping this thread with what could very well be a dumb question the more I think about it, but what the heck.
A Pilot 402 is coming my way in a while. I am wondering if I can use a phono preamp like this going into the Multiplex:

Thank you for the response. I'm going to use a source selector and put it in the main floor system. Switch between solid state and tube.
