Pinnacle Decibel Model 98db

Hello all, been here a while and got away from audio...Now I'm back and dipping my toe in the pool. Currently I am gobbling up all the stuff I lusted after when i was young and broke!

I have recently purchased a set of Pinnacle Decibel Model 98db's. Any chance anyone here has info on these? The PO that had had them had nothing and couldn't remember who he bought them from.

I am pretty sure at least 1 woofer in each cabinet has been swapped for something much cheaper. The wiring was a disaster but I have most of that cleared up.

TIA!

Yeah, Pinnacle made a good speaker at a fair price. It's too bad they went under. If you post pics of the woofers we can probably determine if they've been replaced. The internet is surprisingly short on pics of this model.

The top woofers are probably original, and the bottoms probably replacements. However, the best way to figure it out would be to remove the woofers and take photos of the magnets with their markings.

I have that and if I was smart I would have added... I found the one I think is legit on ebay. The other brings up nothing I can find. I'm hoping all I need to do is purchase the correct woofers and rock on...

The woofer on the right looks like it came out of a cheap rack system speaker. Notice the built-in capacitor and the extra terminals. Those would have been to connect a tweeter. I don't think Pinnacle ever did anything like that.

I wonder, was Pinnacle a Canadian speaker company?
There were quite a few Canadian companies that made pretty good speakers at an affordable price. I've read it had something to do with being able to use an anechoic chamber that gov't had?

Yeah, these say Plainview, NY. I think i found 2 replacements on Ebay. Fingers crossed!

Thanks for the help Swechsler!

Let us know how it turns out. Always great to help get a rare speaker working again. Would love to see more pics as well, once complete, with the grilles, and the rear panels.

You bet, they replacements should be here by the 11th and installed 30m after that! I'll post a bunch of completed photos. These are really cool angled ports and all. Built like a shipping crate and heavy!

Never seen a Pinnacle like that. Where is the tweeter? They always used high quality drivers like Audax. Strange the ports are on the front. My Aerogel towers are on the back.

Maybe they built new cabinets?

If you do a Google image search, you'll see that some Pinnacles had their port(s) on the front.

The tweeter is behind the waveguide.

These seem to be pretty rare, I can only find one post anywhere even mentioning them. Almost nothing exists. I have even reached out to folks that owned Pin but no response... It's just a MTM with the ports on the front.

I found some replacement woofers on eBay and installed them. They are running just like they should now! Now I'm wrestling with completely redoing the cabinets...

Best $100 I've spent, well $150 with the eBay drivers.

I got the cabinets back. The xovers were sent to Crites, I tried but there is a bunch of stuff on those that is a tight fit and I'm no expert...

My wife wanted them dark, so that's what they are. If she supports me putting something in the living room, she picks the color. These aren't the most WAF design (apparently better than my Squires), they are quite large. I have some old Pinnacle subs that will be the stands.

I will post completion pics and impressions once everything is finished and they are set up.
