Pioneer (2) HPM-100 & (2) HPM-40 Repair Recommendations

Just got my hands on these today and I'm really excited. I definitely paid more than I wanted but considerably less than they're worth,from what I have researched.
I'm a total rook in the world of vintage gear in mostly all aspects..full disclosure lol
My father's always had 70s era gear so I know of the good names and what to look out for.
These and a Pioneer QX949 are my first set.

Which wood veneer should I buy or do you use?

Properly upgrading the crossovers is a task I would like to do but I am uncertain what to replace and honestly what is what other than the coil..I'm not an electrical genius but once I know what to look up and order I can research the proper methods.

I want to do these right and make them look like the iconic classics that they are. All advice is greatly appreciated!!

No comments on the Veneer, you can post a pic of the x-overs. you might be able to vacuum out that cone depression, "Simply Speakers" probably has the foam surrounds and center cones.

I realize your limited knowledge, do you have a DMM and solder gear?

Hi.. veneer is tricky but doable...Although I suspect the veneer to be a thick vinyl on those speakers...
Never the less... Looks to me veneer repair is not possible or atleast tricky for the new vintage gear fan..

My advice... strip the speakers and filter out of the speaker cabinet, find a good knowledgeble veneer seller who is willing to teach... They are out there... for sure... Or find an "oltimer" who is happy to share his venering skils. He will be thankfull for your eager to learn and you learned a dying art....


About your filter... Leave the coils... they are very specific and have no ware.... Replace the capacitors...
There are many people that will tell you to buy the latest "vigin oil soaked wonder capacitor" at the costs of a hunderd dollar each.... Yes they are trully great preformers but you are still a fairly new to the vintage gear game...you need to have room to improve on what you already did before and hear the sometime minor differences..

So don't go with that right now....Take the original caps to an electronic part shop and tell them you want MKP or MKT caps as replacements...
Truh they also will cost you (more then the standard electrolits) but are very good value for the first few years learning the innerworks of real Vintage Audio gear.

Voltage higher then what is listed on the caps, value should be the same...

I just replied 3 min ago on another hpm40 topic. I had the same project this summer. I will try to explain what i did, sorry for my english, although i speak english on a daily basis i dont discuss carpentry related topics too often get rid off the vinyl and that plastic cover. Sand the box and make sure there is no dust on it. Apply wood glue on the box only, i saw in some youtube videos they glued the veneer to, i got very bad results with that. After youre done, sand it, but dont oversand the edges! If you oversand it the painting wont be nice. After sanding you can paint it but right after you apply one layer wipe it off with a piece of cloth. So basically after 15seconds. If you are not happy with the result of the color you can apply another layer with the same technique. I skipped glossing, it looked very cool already.
Pls note that i have zero capentry knowledge, one of my friend is a carpenter and he gave some advices, but did it alone, not a big deal, you can easily do it for yourself. By the way i used mahogany veneer and applied wallnut color on it. The shop didnt have wallnut veneer

@bencce Well I think you did a great job. I'm not a carpenter either, but your work looks solid to me as does the way you handled staining them..

Jeeez what happened to the woofer of this speaker?

Some people (previous owners) think they can fix foam rot with Contact glue....This could be one of those cases..
Nothing what can not be fixed with a little refoaming and redoming I think...
